Ecuador bullfighters’ protest looks a lot like you think it would

With the Middle East becoming a hotbed of political unrest, Ecuador thought that it would get in on the action in its own weird fashion. What would prompt Ecuadorans to take to the streets in angry protest? The government’s proposed ban on bullfighting, of course. Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa is proposing a ban on the slaughter of animals in public spectacles, which would cover bullfights (but not, strangely, cockfighting).

The proposal is among several issues that Ecuadorans will vote on in a May referendum.

β€œThe question… concerns spectacles in which the goal is to kill the animal. Cockfights are not affected by this problem and will be allowed,” Mr. Correa told Radio Huancavilca in the western city of Guayaquil.

In late January Correa said that the measure covered both cockfights and bullfights. He clarified β€” or further confused, depending on the viewpoint β€” that statement.

Here’s what a bullfighters’ protest looks like. Colorful, weird … like a junior Mardi Gras. But hopefully it’s the next domino to fall in the eradication of this ‘sport.’
