There are some obviously dangerous assignments in the world of sports– the yearly running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain comes to mind, for instance. Then there are some assignments that present danger in a much less expected way…dear God, is that, is that an alpaca?

The ESPN reporter seen in this video was just doing his job at a soccer tournament in Peru, when a future sweater decides it doesn’t much appreciate where he’s standing and takes a running charge at the gent from behind (thankfully having a video-camera in front of you serves as a very effective pair of eyes-in-the-back-of-your-head).

Luckily for this guy alpacas are cousins to llamas and not big horn sheep, and one wonders if he was ever really in any danger (not that I’m blaming him for taking off at all. Maybe the alpaca wanted to tickle him to death). Glad that everyone made it out unscathed.

Many years ago, SI did an article about llama’s as herd protectors. Seems these animals don’t take a lot of crap from predators, but rather, attack viciously. Excellent protection from flock raiders like wolves, even have documented instances of chasing away bears. And an alpaca is just a llama from another neighborhood…maybe he was wound up by the odd silhouette the announcer presented with his umbrella.
