So these guys have caught a marlin near Port Stephens, northeast of Sydney, Aus., and have tagged it for release back into the sea. One problem, though: Sharks love tasty marlin, just like us. When Sydney Daily Telegraph columnist/photographer Al McGlashan jumps into the water to photograph the marlin’s release, he gets a big surprise.

“It was about 3m long and came up vertically at amazing speed. One second there was nothing then this huge shark flies up, just opened its jaws and hit the marlin around its anal fin just in front of its tail.

The crew member on the boat who was holding the marlin by its spear was initially unaware what was happening.

“He let go as the marlin started to be tossed around and then the mako just took its whole tail off with one bite,” McGlashan said.

“The water just went red, a cloud of blood erupted and the mako let go and swam though the blood and vanished.

“I think adrenalin had me pushing the button on the camera but I’ve got to admit I was a tad worried when I lost sight of the shark in the blood, and I then had to swim through the blood to get back to the boat.”
