Look, I’m no fit judge for American Idol (one thing that Steven Tyler and I have in common), but I know what I like. And I didn’t much care for Christina Aguilera’s National Anthem on Sunday, and not only because she flubbed the lyrics. She contorted the song into shapes it wasn’t meant for, leaving the whole thing a mess. But in rehearsal, footage of which was obtained by TMZ, Aguilera did a great job. Got the words right and everything.
I can’t imagine what it’s like to sing in a crowded stadium with the mic delay and the noise and the pressure and the timing so that it ends just as the jets are flying over … see, this is why the Beatles stopped performing live. And by the way, if you think I’m being harsh, you’ll change your mind when you see how the Chicago Tribune ripped Aguilera the next day.
And now, what I imagine it sounded like as Alex Rodriguez sang along with the National Anthem on Sunday:
“Mmm Mmm Mmffff, can ymmmf seefff, by the dawnfffff mmmm mm mmffffmm …”
