Glenn Beck rips players at Super Bowl for Anthem etiquette

Feb 7, 2011, 3:23 PM EDT

First he giggled at William Gay’s last name (that needs to be said at the outset, to give you an idea of what we’re dealing with), but then Glenn Beck had a bone to pick with what happened during the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. No, it had nothing to do with Christina Aguilera fumbling the lyrics (Random fan: “Hey, I thought we were supposed to proudly hail at some point …”). Glenn complained on his radio show today that several of the players apparently did not place their hands over the hearts during the Anthem. It seems that Beck monitors these things. From the Huffington Post:

“Was anybody else offended by…can you put your hand on your heart?” Beck said. “It’s the national anthem!” He said he had shushed his son and told him to put his hand on his heart when Christina Aguilera was singing the song.

“I was really offended by the sports players that were just hanging on their jersey,” Beck said. “The country that gives them the ability to…pursue their happiness in peace and safety is not worth putting your hand on the heart.”

Just a guess, but I’d wager that Glenn does a lot of “shushing” in his household.

And here’s a note to Beck and other media bullies who think that they occupy the patriotic high ground because they’ve memorized the requisite body gestures. How about complaining about the real disrespect to our nation, such as supporting a Bush administration that gets us into illegal wars, advocates torture, ignores wounded veterans and fires U.S. Attorneys for purely political reasons?

Hey Glenn, see if you can guess which hand gesture I’m giving now?

Really Rick Chandler. You have no clue what youre talking about and there you go being a hypocrite by slinging a political reference right back at the guy you hate-write about. Grow up, no i know why no one leaves comments on your articles (if they can even be called that). no one reads ‘em, get a life dude. how bout doing some actual journalism and give us your idea of what you think about the gesture not being done by all players, not your opinion about Beck. geeeez you suck….

    • cur68 - Feb 7, 2011 at 9:16 PM

You read what you write before you post it? Seriously, whatever argument you might have with Mr. Chandler is severely diminished because it seems you write at a grade 6 level. At least Mr. Chandler is funny.

      • medtxpack - Feb 8, 2011 at 8:58 AM

sorry your wrong, college grad actually. its a comment on a blog so no i dont feel the need to send it to an editor or anything. 68 must be the year you were born…old hack…looks like you like to judge a book by its cover.

      • jjtroy1 - Feb 8, 2011 at 8:01 PM

if you are graduate level, why the constant generalities….nothing we can sink our teeth into other than O is running the country into the ground…how, where, when. This is the conversation of laziness…show me the beef. Were exactly is the socialism other than the police, teachers, fire dept, military….things we all support for the social good. Again…be specific and we can at least have a graduate school conversation….

  2. cur68 - Feb 7, 2011 at 9:11 PM

Dear Mr. Chandler; U & me both giving him that gesture…sanctimonious ass-clown that he is.

  3. turf24 - Feb 8, 2011 at 6:37 AM

    medtxpack = Sheep

Wake up moron, if you don’t see the fact that Beck is an idiot who just likes to fire people up over nothing then you must have a rather thick layer of wool over your eyes. You gonna tell me the president was born in Kenya next?

    • ceebs61 - Feb 8, 2011 at 8:55 AM

Awww, but that wool is nice and warm and comfy…it feels safe, it’s dangerous to think for yourself you know…

    • medtxpack - Feb 8, 2011 at 9:01 AM

actually i didnt defend Beck at all in my post and it looks like you didnt read mine, you just got mad and wanted to post a comment. im not a sheep i think for myself, and whats makes Chandlers post any different from Beck in trying to post stuff to fire people up. he belongs in the Op Ed of the Examiner….
and since you brought it up, i could give a piss where O was born, he still is running this country into the ground. socialism brother, socialism…this is the land of the free, love it or leave it punk.

      • turf24 - Feb 8, 2011 at 9:25 AM

Ok if you think what’s going on here is socialism then you obviously don’t know jack about what socialism is and you get your definition from Fox News. Running the country into the ground? You’re right it has nothing to do with Bush raping the country for 8 years and spreading fear to all kinds of small minded people like you and basically screwing us for the next 15-20 years atleast. I’m gonna guess you’re some middle aged, middle to upper class white dude who wishes the world would go back to 1960 and you spend most of your time going to tea party rallys and yukking it up with your friends at the country club. People like you are the problem with this country, not those who actually try to educate themselves on the issues and care about people besides themselves.

  4. medtxpack - Feb 8, 2011 at 9:42 AM

again turf24 with a big ol glass of lets judge the guy i dont know and make accusations!!! listen man, im educated, went to college, think for myself, have a job. i dont do the country club stuff, to ego-like for me, i do like tea and i do party. you whole post is just a jab at what you think i am, how sad bro. i do know what socialism is and if bush was wrong whyd big O extend his tax cuts? you think you can spend your way outta debt, pleeeeeease. enjoy debt sucka. further, how do you know what channels i watch, your so angry, did you wife or gf leave you or something….geeeez. and for the record if we could go back to a decade, id pick the 50s, great music, great cars, good economy…

    • chiefagc5675 - Feb 8, 2011 at 6:09 PM

“Went to college”- so you are like beck and oxy rush- they didn’t graduate either.
You don’t know what socialism is because you accused Obama of it- his programs are no different than we’ve always had- maybe you’re one of the teabaggers who was yelling for the government to get their hands off his medicare. Stupid righties will have us in 3rd world status soon.

  5. turf24 - Feb 8, 2011 at 10:06 AM

Yeah I bet you like the 50′s no civil rights back then either, its tough to debate with someone who can’t see the world in front of them, I’m done…………

  6. medtxpack - Feb 8, 2011 at 10:46 AM

again really, no youre not done, you were defeated. im 25 years old dimwit. i can appreciate a little history because history is what predicts the future. and you wernt debating, you were rambling off your opinions at someone youve never met. now that youve proven it (so its not an accusation), you sir are a pinhead.

    • vader000 - Feb 8, 2011 at 11:37 AM

Well after reading your posts on here you’ve definetly proven yourself to be the pinhead. It looks like the guy arguing with you earlier got sick of not getting any intelligent responses from you so I’ll take up the cause of idiot bashing. You keep deriding others for making accusations about people who they don’t know but you were the one to leave the first comment and it was full of insults about the author who you obviously don’t know. And you have continued to do so to everyone who has posted anything arguing your points if you can call them that. You’re quite transparent and apparently lacking any wit whatsoever. I await your next incoherent pointless response….

      • medtxpack - Feb 8, 2011 at 11:42 AM

i know you, and thats all that matters. look behind you. ha

you must be a friend or a pinhead yourself to stick up for someone like him

      • vader000 - Feb 8, 2011 at 11:43 AM

Also waiting to here what ridiculous reasons you would use to justify Iraq, torture, ignoring veterans, firing US attorneys over politics, Guantanomo Bay, doing away with the estate tax for the rich, out of control defense spending, leaving the people of New Orleans to die and don’t forget giving Halliburton billions in no bid contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan……..

      • ThatGuy - Feb 8, 2011 at 12:27 PM

I don’t have time to address all your issues, but often its just a matter of values. Two educated people can reach completely different opinions on those subjects based on their different value systems. I would justify Iraq by saying it is a good thing to get rid of a dictator that commited Genocide against his own people, and something we should do more. But thats a matter of opinion. Whats not a matter of opinion is the attrocities that Sadam did to his own people, especially in the kurdish regions and he needed to be dismissed. Make no mistake, the people of Iraq are glad we intervened and are there, now its time to step aside and let them govern themselves. As far as Guantanomo Bay, its a prison for enemy combatants. I see absolutly no problem with it. Torture? Waterboarding saved lives and is far better than they would do to us if we were captured. War is ugly, always has been. Estate Tax for the rich, again just a different set of values. That money has already been taxed as income tax, because you die the government gets to take another 40% off the top before it gets to your family? Why is that right? Because the government wants more money doesn’t make it right.

      • vader000 - Feb 8, 2011 at 1:56 PM

Don’t have time to debate you on your points, I don’t agree with most of them but I respect them. Atleast it seems you are taking the time to examine the issues for yourself and form an opinion on your own rather than listening to the watchwords the talking heads throw out and take all their bull as facts.

“I may not agree with what you say sir, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”

      • hubfan - Feb 8, 2011 at 3:46 PM

ThatGuy states some interesting opinions. It was apparently a good thing to get rid of a dictator who was terrible for his country by destroying the entire infrastructure of the country, killing somewhere between 40K and 400K Iraqis, many of them innocent civilians, at a mere expense of 1 Trillion dollars, give or take a few hundred million. And that’s not even counting the 4000+ U.S service men and women killed. And all this so we can create a new Islamic fundamentalist state closely allied with our worst enemy, Iran. You might want to rethink that opinion.
As to the estate tax there are a couple of problems with your analysis. When very rich people give assets to their heirs or devisees much of it is in the form of appreciated assets. The appreciation of the assets has never been taxed (ie when you buy a house you don’t have to pay income tax on the increase in value, which we use to actully see). And a neat little feature of our estate tax system is that when someone leaves you that appreciated asset you get a stepped up basis in the asset. This means you don’t have to pay any taxes on the appreciation in the asset if you sell it. Voila, no tax is paid on the asset unless there is an estate tax.
And while I try to respect individual opinions, your blase attitude about torturing other human beings demonstrates that you have veered far from the values that I think make America the Greatest country in the world.

      • chiefagc5675 - Feb 8, 2011 at 6:16 PM

        that guy
But thats a matter of opinion. Whats not a matter of opinion is the attrocities that Sadam did to his own people, especially in the kurdish regions and he needed to be dismissed. Make no mistake, the people of Iraq are glad we intervened

Righty BS. We’re not the cop of the world. Other dictators have killed more of their own people than Saddam did- oh right, those countries don’t have oil. We gave Saddam the gas he used against his own people- we only wear a white hat in the perverted minds of righties
who seem to think rules don’t apply to us.we have no rules- only those other countries that we rape. Dumbya, cheney, rummy and Kissinger can never leave this country or they’ll be arrested and taken to the Hague for trial as war criminals.

    • cur68 - Feb 8, 2011 at 4:34 PM

That’s rich; you calling someone a dimwit. Can’t even spell and a menace to the common apostrophe. You buy that ‘college degree’? If not what ‘college’ was it? Beck’s on-line college? If anything is proven here is that Mr. Chandler is erudite, can spell, knows a douchebag when he sees one and I’d buy him a drink of his choice if I ever met him. You sir, really need to read what you write before you post it. That’s what people who don’t want to be perceived as an illiterate tool do. Hell, even Beck takes the trouble to sound out a word before he scrawls it and he’s a douche of the first order. Honestly these on-line forums are a menace sometimes; a dunce like you weighs in like they’re godalmighty and reasonable people get drowned out by all the blow-harding. At least use the damn spell check. I’m sick of parsing your lousy typing.

  7. arrogantathlete - Feb 8, 2011 at 11:26 AM

Yeah who cares about respect for the national anthem. I just want to facebook, twitter, and watch football. Glenn Beck is an idiot.

  8. ThatGuy - Feb 8, 2011 at 12:30 PM

    Rick… Your NBC is showing

  9. jarrod600 - Feb 8, 2011 at 12:32 PM

Hey Rick, I am a wounded vet of that ‘illegal war’…Glenn Beck is a tool. So are you.

  10. BC - Feb 8, 2011 at 1:30 PM

    Glenn Beck is a chipwich.

    • psousa1 - Feb 11, 2011 at 2:20 PM

What’s a chipwich is that the ice cream cookie?

  11. deckham - Feb 11, 2011 at 7:44 PM

Awful post Mr. Chandler. Instead of bashing Beck because he’s a Republican why don’t you actually try to listen to what he’s saying for once. That’s the problem with the Liberal Media and the Far Left in general. You never listen.

Beck says “Put your hand on your heart and show some respect for this country.”
Chandler’s response: “Up yours Beck…. see my finger!”

Try to look at something with an unbiased eye for once and then take a deep breath. You can then type up a proper response.
