There’s not liking a team, there’s being rivals with a team, and then there’s calling one of another team’s greatest players of all-time a “p***y” after randomly shoving a fan of that team in the back at a football game. That level of commitment is reserved for the likes of Bill Murray, Chicago Bears super-fan and someone who pretty much does what he wants to.
You all remember Murray from quirky Wes Andersen flicks and the over-rated pile of art school suck that is Sophia Copolla’s career filmography, but these days he’s staying relevant by feuding with Packers fans at Soldier field and calling out a tough-man linebacking legend in the process. Our friend Weed Against Speed at Sportress of Blogitude passes along this exchange from last Sunday:
My friend Matt…was wearing a Green Bay jersey (in support of old-school Packers legend Ray Nitschke) amid a sea of Chicago blue. During the 2nd quarter, Matt celebrated a considerably good play on the part of Green Bay with the usual hootin’ and hollerin’ reserved for such moments. That’s when he was blatantly shoved from behind. Turning to catch a glimpse of his assailant, he discovered his pusher was none other than Bill Murray, a huge Chicago Bears fan, who was unapologetically enjoying the moment.
Matt’s friend managed to capture a photo of Murray in mid-celebration, laughing at the rival fans. Naturally, Matt wanted a picture with the legendary actor. Murray’s response to his request? “Nitschke is a p***y.”
Steve Zissou would be proud. It’s too bad the Bears didn’t show as much heart on the field as Bill did in the stands, or he’d have the opportunity next week to tell some Steelers supporters that Mean Joe Green wears ladies’ underwear (note to Mean Joe Green, on the extremely small chance that he’s reading: I don’t think you wear ladies’ underwear. Please don’t eat me).
It sounds like it all happened in good fun, and it’s always a good sign to see a movie star mixing it up with the averages fans in the stands rather than catching the action from behind a shrimp cocktail in the executive suite. What the erstwhile former Ghostbuster lacks in decorum (and veracity– Nitschke was a beast), we’ll give him in character and flair. I’ll take that trade.
Just be careful out there, Bill. Nitschke’s been dead for 12 years and I’m still pretty sure he could kick your ass. Try picking on a wide receiver next time, they’re easy.

Bill Murray is a Bears fan. He is NOT a superfan. The SUPERFANS are the ones who have supported the Bears since day one in the 1920s and on. And I would wager that a lot of them are probably the ones who have been priced out of being able to afford tickets, which is the NFL’s way of saying “thanks for the support through the years.”
Bill Murry is a bears fan who has enough bux to afford tickets and enough clout to be able to stand on the sideline. He is NOT a superfan.
