The irony here is that no one knew who Jacob Volkmann was before he jokingly called out President Obama during a post-UFC fight interview last week. Now Volkmann is enjoying the publicity he garnered for saying that he’d like to fight Obama over his health care policies. It’s a fight that — at least according to Jay Leno — Volkmann would not win. On Monday, Volkmann backtracked a bit:
“I have an opinion and I have the right to say my opinion – and there’s no regrets of what I said,” Volkmann said. “The only regret I have is calling him an idiot. I don’t think he’s an idiot, but I do think he’s making a lot of mistakes.”
Timeline:
- After beating Antonio McKee on Jan. 2 at UFC 125, Volkmann is interviewed by Fanhouse’s Ariel Helwani. Says Volkmann: “(Obama’s) not too bright … someone’s got to knock some sense into that idiot. I just don’t like what Barack is doing.”
- Volkmann gets a visit by the Men in Black for threatening the President. Pulls at his collar and says, ‘Heh heh, I was just kidding.’ Waterboarding postponed.
- Obama bounces his head off the wall, straightens tie, goes on with his day. Video here.
Volkmann said in the interview that he voted for John McCain in 2008, which means that he voted to Sarah Palin for Vice President. Just saying; guys who live in glass houses shouldn’t be throwing around the term “not too bright.”
