Today in regrettable mix-ups: The Chicago Sun-Times and “Matt Garza”

The print news business is a tough one, and there are thousands of chances for a screw-up in every edition that goes out. Some of those screw-ups are a little worse than others however, as the Chicago Sun-Times has found following their coverage of the Cubs’ big trade for Tampa Bay pitcher Matt Garza Joaquin Benoit Matt Garza.
The photo seen here from their tasteful post-trade spread shows the newly acquired Garza gearing up for one of his signature fastballs. Only one problem: that isn’t Matt Garza.
No, it’s former teammate Joaquin Benoit, who it turns out is quite a different goatee-d, Latino RHP than Garza. Oops.
More so than casual racism, I’m going to chalk this up to lazy editing and a general unfamiliarity with Tampa Bay baseball– the latter part of which can hardly be held against anyone. It’s an unfortunate gaffe and the paper will surely be issuing a “we regret the error” statement soon enough.
And hey, something called a “Joaquin Benoit” got his picture in a major American news outlet (twice, if you count Deadspin). Let’s try to keep the positives in mind here.
