Tuesday Blogdome: ESPN vs. Jim Harbaugh at the Orange Bowl

Sadly, the primary disseminators of Stanford’s crowning achievement, Orange Bowl broadcaster ESPN, steeply discounted the historical significance of the moment by focusing on what is, in comparison, a rather transient subject. This isn’t to say that ESPN wasn’t justified in inquiring about Jim Harbaugh’s job status. But the method of questioning should have been determined with the coach off-air, and well before the broadcast. If during those meetings Harbaugh asked that he not be asked any questions about his employment on the telecast, then that would then be noted on the broadcast.

But to continue to press the coach about his job status while knowing full well that he wasn’t going to reveal any information about the subject — especially in light of the astonishing achievement of the Stanford team — wasn’t just unprofessional, it was juvenile. [Sports by Brooks]

  • iConfess, Mark Sanchez’ PowerBalance Bracelet a Fraud. “PowerBalance keeps me focused and balanced every play, every day!”-Mark Sanchez QB New York Jets. Yeah, not so much: In our advertising we stated that Power Balance wristbands improved your strength, balance and flexibility. We admit that there is no credible scientific evidence that supports our claims and therefore we engaged in misleading conduct in breach of s52 of the Trade Practices Act 1974. If you feel you have been misled by our promotions, we wish to unreservedly apologise and offer a full refund. [Bob's Blitz]
  • Tim Tebow Looks To Prove His Skeptics Wrong Once Again. How hard it is to hear the criticism about him and his game: “Well it is frustrating but at the same time I definitely have to thank them because those people and what they say definitely fuel me and I believe make me a lot better. It’s been very similar all the way since I was a freshman in high school when they wouldn’t let me play quarterback my freshman year in high school and they said I wasn’t good enough and I could never do it. I just had to start proving them wrong. I am very blessed to have that opportunity to try and do that again.” [Sports Radio Interviews]
  • Georgia Peachbasket: Cobb’s great grandson plays college hoops. In the past, Yahoo! Sports has profiled the college baseball player by the name of Joe DiMaggio and shone a spotlight on a tyke-sized third baseman named Brooks Robinson in last year’s Little League World Series. Now it’s come to our attention (via NotGraphs) that there’s a college basketball player named Ty Cobb. And unlike our two previous cases, he’s actually related to his baseball legend namesake. For the Record: Ben Roethlisberger, in walking stick form … the best sports gifs of 2010, via SB Nation … Just so you know, in soccer, punching a teammate in the face will get you sent off.
