Can this man save the the 49ers?

Is it just me, or does Jed York look like he should be playing Quidditch for Hufflepuff house rather than running an NFL football team? As a 49ers fan, this screen cap gives me zero confidence going into the Swamps of Sadness that is the 49ers 2011 offseason. But let’s hear Jed out … first of all on why Mike Singletary was made to exit down the emergency slide:

“Yesterday wasn’t fun. It’s never fun to let a good person like Mike Singletary go, someone that you respect. But it’s about making sure the 49ers are on the right path to success, and we needed to make a change.”

This is what I’ll miss most about Singletary’s departure, of course.

This next part should be of particular note to anyone on the 49ers named Smith:

(York on the philosophy of hiring the next general manager): “They need to understand that, and I don’t think there are too many guys out there around the league that have been general managers or want to be general managers that won’t tell you that success starts with the quarterback. I think just about every one would tell you that success starts with the quarterback. It’s a lot easier to get it done if you have a superstar quarterback, but if you don’t have one, how do you build a structure that supports a guy in there who might be average, but he can still win you a Super Bowl.”

The only one that York would name as being in the mix in this regard is current 49ers VP of player personnel Trent Baalke. But in my opinion he’s a longshot. York wants a bigger name; someone with the clout to be able to reel in Jim Harbaugh or Jon Gruden as head coach. CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported that the 49ers interviewed former Rams player personnel head Tony Softli today.

My choice as GM? Steve Young. And as you know, what I say goes.

And once that’s accomplished? Four simple words: Offensive coordinator Norv Turner. (Laugh track).
