Notre Dame, Miami barring players from crossing into Mexico during Sun Bowl trip

If any Notre Dame players had their hearts set on a souvenir serape or tortilla basket, too bad; coaches for both the Fighting Irish and Miami Hurricanes have banned them from crossing the border into Mexico before Friday’s Sun Bowl. The reason? It tends to get rather shooty over there. From the Huffington Post:
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly took his team’s passports before the Fighting Irish flew to El Paso as a precaution. The Hurricanes didn’t bring passports, either, and met with both local law enforcement and the FBI on Sunday shortly after arriving in Texas to further underscore the potential dangers of crossing the border.
Fans from both schools have also been urged to be cautious. El Paso borders the Mexican city of Cuidad Juarez, which is wrapped in a drug war. Officials say more than 3,000 people have been killed there this year alone, and the vast majority of crimes in the city are never investigated.
Hmm. They don’t mention that in the travel guide.
Only a few minutes from the city of El Paso, Texas, it’s a very lively city with lots of entertainment, sporting events and nightlife.
There are a number of colonial churches which are well worth a visit. Directly across from the Main Plaza, Our Lady of Guadelupe has very old paintings and altars. The Cathedral next door, neo-clasical facade of recent construction, is built where the old graveyard used to be.
(Words in parentheses mine):
For a great shopping experience (with hardly any gunplay) head for the Mercado Tipico or the Mercado Juarez. The Mercado Tipico is a beautiful colorful old city market filled with art-folklore-music and of course (spent cartridges). This very liked tourist spot always has something exciting going on (like muggings, truck hijacking, running gum battles). Don’t leave Cd. Juarez visiting it. The Mercado Juarez is the oldest city market. It features curious (I think they mean curio) shopping, groceries shopping, authentic Mexican (drugs) and music, played by mariachis and “norteno” groups. This is also a must visit! (“I’ve been hit! Go on without me!”)
