Venezuela, you’re not doing it right; in a soccer riot it’s the fans who are supposed to be uncontrollable thugs, and the police doing their best to restore order. But the Caracas Metropolitan Police seem to have a different agenda during Sunday night’s match between Caracas FC and Petare, as a fracas breaks out between security forces and Caracas FC fans.
Police fire rubber bullets everywhere, and at one point begin beating cowering civilians with seat-backs and their helmets as other fans run for cover. From the appropriately-named Unprofessional Foul:
It’s a bit unusual for Venezuelan soccer, which doesn’t have nearly as bad a reputation for soccer violence as that of other countries in the Southern cone, because the game is less popular there.
The are a couple different versions for how this incident came about: some say the cops were settling a score with the Caracas “Roja” barra from a previous encounter, others say they were retaliating for an attack on one of the officers. Regardless, the methods they employed are inexcusable. There’s other shaky home videos of the violence on the videotubes where you can see women and children climbing over the security fence to try to flee the chaos.
The Caracas Metro Police is also one of Hugo Chavez’s main arms of repression, which he employs frequently to suppress opposition to his crazy twelve year regime. So this might just be another episode in that ongoing saga.

That’s absolutely hilarious. Did anyone even run against Chavez? If there is only one name on the ballot and the Government Police acts like this. What number of that 90% supports Chavez out of Fear?
