From the magnificent minds at Big League Stew comes this fantastically heartwarming Thanksgiving tale about how a throwaway quip by Yogi Berra to a bunch of naive North Dakota potato farmers who didn’t realize that they should basically ignore everything Yogi says if they wish to interact with him in a manner deemed human ended with 23 tons of potatoes squashing daisies on Yogi’s front lawn. Why he didn’t ask for their wallets when they delivered the potatoes is anyone’s guess.

“Yogi, what are you doing to us this morning?” a neighbor yelled to the former New York Yankee manager and catcher. He replied, “Come back later, Virginia, and get some potatoes.”

Two truckers drove 2 1/2 days to bring the Red River Valley potatoes from North Dakota. They and three members of the Red River Valley Potato Growers Assn. spent several hours unloading 100 cases of the spuds. The delivery continued a joke launched by Berra when he visited the state last year and local officials told him North Dakota was among the nation’s largest growers of potatoes. Berra, a self-proclaimed potato lover, reportedly said, “You don’t have enough potatoes to fill my front lawn.”

“I don’t know if I ever said that,” Berra said. “What the heck, it’s fun. I know one thing, I’ll get enough potatoes for the rest of the year.”

Though the idea of Yogi Berra having to slave away on those 23 tons of potatoes for the rest of his adult life is a hilarious proposition (“ONLY 17 TONS TO GO, HONEY!”), sadly this was not the case as Berra had the potatoes shipped out as an act of love to needy people because he’s a great guy like that. Let’s hope if we’re ever shipped thousands of pounds of a single vegetable we’ll have the same kindness in our hearts. I know I will, but only because I hate those things. If it were candy corn instead things would be A LOT different.
