Video: Stay off the grass … Principal bars ambulance from football field for concussed player

Welcome to Del Mar High School in Campbell, Calif., where both Dick Vermeil and Adrienne Barbeau got their start. Let the record show that the school first opened in 1959, and common sense died there on Oct. 29, 2010. That’s when school principal Liz Seabury blocked an ambulance from driving onto the school’s football field to retrieve an athlete who had suffered a concussion during a junior varsity football game. Keanu Gallardo was waiting for paramedics to transport him to the hospital when Seabury — doing a pretty good impression of the guy standing in front of the tank in Tienanmen Square — declared the field off limits to motor vehicles. the reason? She was afraid the vehicle would damage the field. I guess we just can’t have nice things! From ABC-7:
Gallardo had suffered a concussion during Del Mar’s JV football game on Oct. 29. But after 911 was called, he had to lay and wait for emergency workers to haul a gurney 75 yards downfield.
Del Mar’s principal, Liz Seabury, says she was following district orders, banning motorized vehicles on the school’s recently remodeled field.
“I think it’s a failure to apply common sense across the board,” said Campbell Union High School District board member Matthew Dean.
“What kind of environment have we created such that the principal does or doesn’t feel comfortable overriding a rule,” said Dean.
