Headline of the day so far: ‘Dick Van Dyke saved by porpoises’

Whew. I am very relieved to discover that this, in fact, was not some feverish dream brought on by tainted Mexican food: It turns out that I was indeed watching Craig Ferguson’s late-night talk show on Monday, and Dick Van Dyke was a guest, and he related a story about being saved by porpoises while on a surfboard (video after the jump). Of course we all know that Mr. Van Dyke has had a very close relationship with Mr. Booze in the past, so who knows if it’s true; but he told Ferguson that he was an avid surfer in his youth, and one time he fell asleep on his board and when he woke up he couldn’t see land.
“I woke up out of sight of land … so I looked around and I started paddling with the swells and I started seeing fins swimming around me and I thought, ‘I’m dead!’.”
“They turned out to be porpoises [and] they pushed me all the way to shore. I’m not kidding.”
The porpoise story begins at about the 8:26 mark.
