Yes, goalies in chicken costumes would be the best thing to ever happen to soccer. The second best thing? If a Portuguese fan somehow smuggled a live chicken into a pro match, held onto it in the stands for 45 minutes (epic), and then let it loose on the field. (Video following the jump). It happened in Portuguese Liga Sagres, where two of the country’s big three teams, Porto and Benfica, met in a crucial match. I’ll let the great soccer blog Unprofessional Foul explain it from here:
The video comes from just before halftime when Porto fans, taunting the opposition keeper, threw golf balls and a live chicken onto the pitch.
Yes, a live chicken was smuggled in and thrown at a player. But why would someone do that? Because, according to the 101 Great Goals post where we spotted this video, Portuguese slang for a keeper howler is frango, or chicken. Therefore it’s only a small leap of logic for a fan to decide to taunt the keeper with an actual chicken. Personally, I would have gone with throwing the rubber variety, as the real kind is much too tasty.
As with any video involving Portuguese soccer, my favorite part is the chicken noises.
