I’ve seen enough of the HBO Series Treme to know that New Orleans is known for a few things: good music, costume parties, and an abundance of alcohol. And at least two of those three things are going to be on display Sunday Night as the hometown hero and defending Super Bowl champs Saints take on the most storied franchise in NFL history, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in what NBC Sports is hoping Guinness World Records will verify as the world’s largest Halloween “gathering” (they may as well just call it a party, as I believe New Orleans law states any group of 3 or more unrelated people enjoying a beverage must be considered as such). That is to say, there will be slightly more people dressed up as fools in the Superdome than there usually are.
As the home of garish get-ups for everyday activities, celebrating Halloween in New Orleans is a bit like enjoying Christmas on the North Pole — smack dab in the capital of the festive state. Where else would you want to be? The costume possibilities are endless (though I have a feeling anyone in a Ben Roethlisberger send-up might not be let in), there will be good football being played, and if it’s a real Halloween Party, there will be enough candy on hand to send an entire army of 6-year-olds into a catatonic state (otherwise known as the parent of an active child’s best friend — the food coma).
Be sure to tune in Sunday Night and check it out — you wouldn’t want to miss the World’s Largest Halloween Party, would you? And with the combination of the aforementioned Ben Roethlisberger’s return to prominence and the Saints being forced to play with some urgency following last week’s shocking home defeat to the Browns, there should be a good game on hand as well. Also, unlike your own Halloween party, you won’t awake to Tinkerbell and a low-rent Hulk Hogan getting frisky on your loveseat ottoman kitchen counter.
Saints fans will just be hoping that Drew Brees leaves last week’s Billy Joe Hobert costume at home.
