As we recall from last week, the Miami Herald held a big LeBron James Poetry Contest, and more than 1,100 poems poured in from 31 states and Canada. The best part is that the Herald is asking readers to choose the winner among the six finalists, whose prose is shown below. Their poll closes at 5 p.m. ET today, so hurry if you want to get in on the voting.
But the REAL best part is that Out of Bounds readers have also sent their LeBron poems. So after the Miami Herald finalists below, I’ll list the Out of Bounds finalists.
The Miami Herald finalists (video here):
Valory Greenfield, 60, of Miami:
It is easy to compare him to a summer’s day.
He is as hot as the team for which he plays.
Like the ball in the logo, my heart is ablaze.
The object of my affection: LBJ.
Justin Milone, 29, born near Cleveland, lives in San Diego:
Welcome to Miami like Will Smith said,
Get them to the playoffs and then play dead.
Stay out of Ohio, no one wants you back,
Seven years of spinnin’ our wheels like Pat Sajak.
Hoping for a hurricane to take you out to sea,
We can name it Karma, and it can take both you and Z.
Paul Kantz III, 43, born in Cleveland, lives in Melbourne, Fla.:
Ten years of dating, she wants to wed.
Take me to the altar, she said.
What can I say, to string her along?
“A ring, you’ll have, before LeBron.”
Content with that, she brings me a beer.
And now I’m good, for another 10 years.
Sheehan Planas-Arteaga, 17, of Miami:
The King has risen, to conquer and plunder,
His rings will soon draw near his number,
Miami has taken the summer’s prize,
Thousands will watch his powder rise,
The MVP reigns, in Miami-Dade,
The Miami Thrice, with Bosh and Wade.
Mary Cox, 68, of North Miami:
So not a sports fan—
must sheepishly admit first
response: Lebron who?
Crystal Booker, 24, of Miami:
Letting go is hard, we know.
The King is here, and we’ve warmed up his seat.
Cleveland go ahead and spit flames.
You can’t burn up the Heat.
And now, the finalists from Out of Bounds readers:
The Chosen One, with all his might, has made a wrong he cannot right;
Miami won him in the end, and now he’s just a Super Friend.
It’s glitzy beach is a mirage; the NBA ain’t ‘Entourage’.
The Alpha Dog he’ll never be, is what we fans wanted to see.
We hope he’s made a huge mistake; hope Cleveland won’t fall in the lake.
For now, we’ve found another chant, for MVP: “DURANT! DURANT!”
– FLBJ
My managers a thug, my moms a ho
I embarassed myself on my own ESPN show.
I talk in third person
I use kids as props.
I’ll quit on South Beach
CLEVELAND ROCKS
– Bovis23
So long Cleveland it is I you’ll be missin
Cause tonight is the night I make my decision
Betrayal not talent i most greatly possess
I really don’t care so just give it a rest
To Miami I travel and win we just might
But in my mind I know…I’ll never be mike
