Buckaroo Banzai: HS running back scores eight TDs in 69-62 win

Nothing special in Oregon Class 5A football two Fridays ago; just Pendleton High School’s 69-62 win over visiting Ontario in which a sophomore running back scored eight touchdowns. Yowza. Meet 6-foot-1, 185-pound Jacob Rickman, who ran for 357 yards and a school-record seven TDs, and also caught a scoring pass. He broke his own record set the week before when he ran for six TDs in a 49-13 win over La Grande.
The best part: Pendleton High’s nickname is the Buckaroos, and they play their home games on the same grounds as the Pendleton Roundup rodeo. Yeehaw!
On Oct. 1, Rickman ran for 347 yards on just 14 carries, an average of 25.1 yards per carry. From the Portland Oregonian:
“He has another gear,” Pendleton coach Mitch Sanders said. “He’s also a tough runner, so when he breaks a tackle, he’s gone.”
Rickman has 940 rushing yards this season in Pendleton’s double-wing offense. Sanders said Rickman is learning new moves as the season progresses, showing off a stiff-arm against Ontario that led to a 50-yard touchdown run.
The teams combined for 1,200 total yards Friday — 598 for Pendleton and 602 for Ontario (0-5). The Buckaroos gained their yardage in 37 plays compared with 87 for the Tigers.
Pete Carroll approves.
Before you ask if the 131 points is a state record, please note that it’s not even the highest-scoring game that Sanders has been involved in. He coached Hood River Valley High to an 84-50 win over Lakeridge in 2002.
By the way, the week following his eight-touchdown game, Rickman was held in check by none other than Hood River Valley, which won in a rainstorm, 28-0.
