As we all know, on Halloween night the Great Pumpkin rises from the pumpkin patch that he deems the most sincere. For several years now this has been in Half Moon Bay, Calif.; home to the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh Off. This year’s winner hails from Citrus Heights, Calif., and weighs in at 1,535 pounds (pictured). And since there’s no steroid testing in this competition, we’re going to have to assume that everything’s legit. The world record, by the way, was set earlier this month in Minnesota with a pumpkin weighing 1,810.5 pounds. I only hope to live to see mankind break the 2,000-pound pumpkin barrier.
As for the morality involved in growing gigantic fruits and vegetables, I leave that for other, wiser men to decide. As Linus so wisely said: “There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.”
