They're back, and they're more annoying than ever

Those of you debating whether to attend the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi should be thrilled to learn that in addition to the deadly poisonous snakes, rampant crime and vicious monkeys, there will be plenty of vuvuzelas. Reports are that more than 10,000 of the plastic horns have been sold in Delhi so far, at a cost of 250 rupees (about $5.50) each. And that’s just through official merchandising; no telling how many have been smuggled in on pirate ships through the vuvuzela black market.

From AFP:

Suresh Kumar, chairman of the Games’ official merchandising company Premier Brands, said 50,000 vuvuzelas had been imported from China and 10,000 had already been bought from stalls, shops and from mobile vans

.

“People here like them because in India we associate celebrations with noise,” he told AFP. “Festivals like Diwali are always very loud.

“Vuvuzelas are the most popular item we are selling. We expect the rest to go by the middle of the Games. And if we have a shortage, we can’t get any more because they were ordered from China.”

Here’s the good news: I understand that scorpions, tigers and insurance salesman are all attracted by the noise of the vuvuzela. Enjoy the games, sports fans!
