Pee Wee football coaches brawl, but it's the kids who get punished

Sep 29, 2010, 6:31 PM EDT

Pearland, Texas; where football is king, coaches tip the scales at three bills and common sense is, apparently, in short supply. An on-field scuffle between two Pee Wee football players turned into a wild brawl between the two coaching staffs recently, the action caught on tape … including a pretty vicious cheap shot to the head by one of the coaches. The result? Bay Area Football League officials have banned both teams — comprised mostly of 11-year-olds — from post-season play; even though it was the adults who were at fault. From the Pearland (TX) Journal:

Tempers then flared and coaches from both teams jumped in, pushing and shoving each other. One video taken by a spectator allegedly shows a Hurricane coach hitting a Patriots coach with his elbow. A full fledged brawl broke out on the field and coaches on both sides began throwing punches.

Bay Area Football League officials say the Patriots coach resigned and is now suspended from the league for life. Several other Hurricanes coaches were thrown out for the rest of the season.

Video following the jump.

At one point in the video, one can see a young player stepping between two adults who are about to come to blows. And check out the vicious cheap shot at the 1:31 mark.
Fights among kids in tackle football are going to happen. But it was because the coaches started fighting that the teams were banned from the playoffs. Is that fair to the kids … some of whom even tried to break up the fight?
Look; come up with a few volunteer coaches — I hear that Jimmy Raye is available — and let the kids play their last couple of games. Man, Texas is just so in LOVE with the death penalty.

Even we Texans are ashamed of this..

My Dad was a Pop Warner Football coach for 45 years and is in the Pop Warner Hall of Fame. If he hadn’t been cremated after his death, he’d be spinning in his grave right now. Shameful, indeed.

It is clearly written in the rules that if coaches or parents engage in a physical altercation that the team/players could and would be suspended. It is not a shame that they are not playing in the playoffs because the ADULTS knew that their actions would result in the punishment they recieved.

Totally agree with your response. Parents and coaches both know the rules! They really need to grow up and act like adults. The coaches should feel bad for their actions and for the punishment their team received because of it.

Good God. I certainly hope that those coaches are all banned for life from coaching in that league. Inexcusable.
It sucks for those kids, agreed. But here’s a good lesson: Life isn’t fair. Those parents shouldn’t be railing against the league and blaming the league. They should be blaming the coaches.

Completely disgraceful behavior by alleged adults !! The coach who sucker punched the other coach from behind should be arrested for assault at the very minumum !

Those kids should be punished. They should have stepped in a told those adults to knock it off, or at least fought the other team so they poor adults did not have to. Shameful.

The BAFL leage should not leave it up to represenatives from other teams to make a decision , they know who the best team is and they don’t want the hurricanes to play in the playoffs . They should have people that don’t even have anything to do with bafl , if the coach from the patriots would have kept his hands to himself this would have never happened, my understanding is he showed up to the game already with a bad attitude due to the fact that coach mckinney had been diciplined from actions that he performed last year.

What an absurd comment–having the kids fight so the “poor adults did not have to.” What age are you–1?! Maybe you should get your diaper changed by your kid since he’s probably more mature than you.

Way to go Patriot and Hurricane coaches, way to put us in the negative spot light! The coach that sucker punched the other coach should have charges filed against him and I hope they keep showing the chicken blank act on national TV.

My question is where were the referees when the kids got into that fight. They are the one that should have stopped the kids not the coaches. I think that the referees are responsible for that fight they should have stopped that fight
