Sorry, Jerry Jones: Charlotte Motor Speedway to have world's largest TV

Sep 26, 2010, 11:00 AM EDT

charlotte motor speedway video board.jpgJerry Jones will not be able to feed his ego with the knowledge that the video board at the new Cowboys Stadium is the world’s largest screen for much longer. Come May, 2011, Charlotte Motor Speedway will wrestle that title away from Jerry’s billion dollar playpen.

Via Geeky Gadgets:

Panasonic is breaking ground on construction of the world’s largest video board at the racetrack. The massive screen will weigh 165,000 pounds and cover an area of 16,000 square feet. The screen will have 720p resolution with the image made up with 9 million LEDs.

The gigantic screen will measure 200-feet wide by 80-feet tall and sit near turns two and three along the back of the track. The placement makes it ideal for fans watching from the Turn four to Turn one area of the track.

720p? What a load of bullcrap. If they really wanted to go all out, they should have sprung for 1080p. Bush league, man.
If I may, allow me to put the gargantuan size of Charlotte Motor Speedway’s new screen in its proper perspective.

The behemoth you see above measures 159 feet by 71 feet, which causes it to be only a paltry 11,200 square feet in over-the-top example of sensory overload. That means the upcoming screen at the Charlotte Motor Speedway is 41 feet longer, 9 feet higher and increases the square footage by a stunning 4,200 square feet. I can only begin to imagine what it will be like to watch cars colliding and careening into walls at top speeds on such a ginormous video screen. That has got to be the only reason people attend NASCAR races, right? I certainly hope it has nothing to do with cavorting with some of the more unseemly individuals they are forced to count among their fellow racing fans.
