* Gopher AD says Mangino hasn’t been hired. A Minneapolis television station reported earlier this week that Mark Mangino had been hired by Minnesota as a consultant for beleaguered and presumably on-the-hot-seat head coach Tim Brewster. The only problem, however, is that the report was apparently inaccurate. Speaking to the St. Paul Pioneer Press Wednesday night, athletic director Joel Maturi called the report “frustrating” because the former Kansas head coach has not been hired as a consultant. “No, he’s not,” Maturi told the Pioneer Press about Mangino being hired by the Gophers. “He just came in as a friend to Coach Brewster.” [College Football Talk]
* Column: Woody Paige Plotted Own Suicide In ’02. Today ESPN Around The Horn panelist and Denver Post columnist Woody Paige addressed the recent self-inflicted death of Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley by relating his own, serious contemplation of suicide, in 2002. [SportsbyBrooks]

* In a Shocking Development, Mike Singletary Isn’t into Moral Victories. “No. Moral victory is something that we really don’t use around here. It’s something that we went into the game not wanting to come out of the game saying.” [Sports Radio Interviews]
* Baseball’s triple crown, easier to win as a pitcher than a hitter. What is more interesting is that pitchers have won the award more frequently lately, but don’t have the same attention as the hitters do. Why does that happen? For most pitchers in baseball, being dominant across the board is easier to accomplish than being the best for a season in the three offensive categories. [Outside the Boxscore]
