Ohio University apologized this morning for the shocking incident of mascot-on-mascot crime which occurred on Saturday, as Rufus the Bobcat viciously tackled and molested the Ohio State mascot, Brutus Buckeye, just prior to the meeting between the two teams at the Horseshoe. In the two videos following the jump, one can see Rufus running the length of the field to tackle Brutus, who was leading the Ohio State team onto the field to begin the game. After shaking off the assault, Brutus proceeded to the end zone, where Rufus again tackled and pummeled him (as seen in this great shot by OhioCollegeFootball.com photographer Dan Poel). The disturbing attack will go down in mascot lore as one of the greatest beatdowns ever, although it also got the person who plays Rufus banned from all future Ohio University athletic events. Hey, at least he went down fighting, unlike his football team on Saturday.

From Forbes.com:

Ohio University has apologized to Ohio State and its fans after the school’s Bobcat mascot tackled the Brutus Buckeye mascot, touching off an impromptu wrestling match before Saturday’s game at Ohio Stadium.

In addition, the student who was dressed in the Bobcat costume has been banned from any further affiliation with Ohio athletics.

Rufus is awaiting his congratulatory call from the Oregon Duck.

A life-time ban? So now the ticket takers have to turn away any person wearing a giant Bobcat head, even if he has paid for his ticket. What’s wrong with America when we condemn all giant Bobcat head wearing fans because of the irresponsible action of just one? I declare species-ism and I say it stops NOW!

I was at the game near the end zone and saw it happen. I have to say my first reaction was that it looked a little kinky.

you suck. you obviously did not go to any of these colleges with history and tradition, and even more obviously, you have no sense of humor. this was a giant joke. and funny one at that. and between schools in ohio where most kids and alumns know lots of people from those schools and good-natured pranking like this goes on all the time. take your old-ninny death-to-fun scrooge attitude somewhere else and rain on their good time, wrinkly old whimp.

you suck too. you obviously did not go to one of these schools with such history and tradition either. and you forget the many millions these programs bring to these schools. or the exposure they get to increase their enrollments. and the intangible things like school spirit from tailgaiting, etc. guaranteed things you and your goody-two shoes pal jblakeley never loosened your sphincters enough to enjoy… take your discontent elsewhere and let the the rest of us (by that i mean everyone else besides you) enjoy some football

I believe that was the best tackle of the day by any Bobcat. I love that he wasn’t even a current student there…it must be VERY hard to replace a mascot.

What I find hilarious is that the Bobcat didn’t get the job done at midfield, so in order to save face he had to give it a second try in the end zone. And yes, sadly it was the best tackle of the day by the Bobcats!
    Gu Bucks!

I am another OSU fan who finds this hilarious!

Another reason why cats (cougars) should be neutered.
