Six-year-old cheerleader thrown off squad for not shaking her booty

Sep 18, 2010, 9:00 AM EDT

Wait, so you’re telling me that adults have engaged in a seemingly trivial dispute over an aspect of youth sports, thereby ruining the experience for the children whom they’re supposed to be serving? I find that very hard to believe. Detroit-area six-year-old Kennedy Tesch and her fellow cheerleaders were asked to perform the cheer, “Our backs ache, our skirts are too tight, we shake our booties from left to right.” When her parents Jennifer and Duane complained about the cheer being “too racy,” their daughter eventually got her booty tossed off the team. Here is the family on The Today Show; and unless you’re involved in charity work or have discovered a new species of caterpillar, being on The Today Show when you’re six can never be good.

Mrs. Tesch, on seeing the cheer for the first time:

“I was in shock, and right away I addressed it with the coach and the general manager of the Wolverines,” Tesch told Meredith Vieira live from Michigan on TODAY Friday.

And everyone acted like adults and it was all resolved peacefully. Just kidding! A mighty war of words ensued.

Kennedy is now enrolled in gymnastics, which is how all sad stories involving children must end.

So let’s get this straight — you have your 6 year old in a cheerleader outfit, performing cheers but one cheer is too risque for you? Don’t sit down at the table and then complain about the free meal, as my Granny would say.

the parents who had this sweet little girl kicked off the team should go jump off a cliff and should not even be parent they are evil and heart less people.

    I applaud you. Stand firm.

So the “cheer” was 20 years old? Cheerleading staff is a little out of the loop. I’ll bet the staff still wear mulletts, shoulder pads and leg warmers, too. Glad my daughters never did this stuff, wouldn’t want them associated with control freaks who thought nothing could be better than the year 1990.

This really demonstrates that you this society has gone nuts. And we wonder why 60% of babies born to women between the ages of 20 and 29 are out of wedlock. Because we do not understand the difference between inappropriate sexually suggestive conduct and just good clean fun. These are cheers for women in college, not babies. No wonder President Clinton could have oral sex with a 21 year old and say it was not sex.

Strutting your stuff before you have any stuff to strut, not knowing what you are doing, NOT knowing the effect you may be having on some creep in the audience or watching on TV and then some other creep who is organizing the thing says it is good clean fun.
One question – what is there about suggestive sexual conduct by a 6 year old girl that is ok?

As a former cheerleader, I can tell you that this is NOT the way we used to cheer. There is no point in making these girls sex-objects at any age. The point USED to be to build team spirit, engage the fans, and support the team. It should NOT be to “shake your bootie”, bounce the boobies, or show your mid-drift. Geez! And I also cheered in Texas!
