Vin Scully once turned down the Yankees

One more reason to love Vin Scully. In this interview with the Yes Network’s Michael Kay, he reveals that at one time he was offered the job as lead broadcaster for the Yankees. “Mel Allen was having some physical problems. … But by that time I had fallen in love with the Dodgers and the O’Malley family … so I turned them down.”
Best part: When Red Barber called him to give him his first big break in broadcasting, Scully’s mother answered the phone. She then tells him: “Vinny! You’ll never guess who’s on the phone. Red Skelton!”
