Columnist Jay Mariotti, suspended ‘indefinitely’ by AOL following a domestic dispute with his girlfriend in August, was charged with seven misdemeanors connected to the incident, Los Angeles city prosecutors announced today. From the Los Angeles Times:
Charges include two counts of domestic violence with injury, two counts of domestic violence, one count of grand theft, one count of false imprisonment and one count of vandalism. Each of the counts carries a maximum of a year in jail, meaning he could face up to seven years behind bars.
Mariotti is to be arraigned Friday at the downtown criminal courts building.
Mariotti was initially charged with felony assault, but the LA district attorneys office said they didn’t have enough evidence for that. His status on the ESPN TV show Around the Horn is still in limbo. It’s also interesting to note the charge of grand theft. Was it an iPhone 4, I wonder?

This guy is a sports columnist, what do you mean by these guys? Misdemeanor criminal activity isn’t exclusive among athletes, be more closed minded.

No one is above the law. I think this is actually the first time he has ever been rendered speechless. You reap what you sow. Hard on everyone else, don’t expect any sympathy.

Only good thing to come of this is that we won’t have to put up with him on Around The Horn…

A mouthy, opinionated bore, Mariotti is one of the most universally loathed writers in sports. You could probably sell tickets to this guys sentencing and sell out in minutes. He’d go well on that show ‘Jersey Shore’. Seems they could always use another loudmouthed italian embarassment.

Of course, all serious charges dropped(lack of evidence my behind) so now he will get a slap on the wrist and be back at AOL in no time. pathetic how the justice system has two sets of laws, one for the rich/famous and one for the common person.
