Michelle Wie is good at golf

Sep 12, 2010, 12:30 PM EDT

Michelle-Wie-28.jpgI know, mind-blowing, right? Obviousness aside, Michelle Wie’s unbelievable front nine yesterday at the Northwest Arkansas Championship where she hit an unbelievable 28 (twenty-freaking-eight!) is an irrefutable sign that Wie is finally turning the corner and making the transition from golfing prodigy to a legitimate force as she continues to establish herself as a force to be reckoned with on the LPGA Tour.
Wie finished with a 7-under 64 but her first nine holes were awe-inspiring. Beginning her round on the 10th hole, Wie birdied five of her first seven holes and at the end of the day, she was 10-under for the tournament after two rounds and holds a three-stroke lead over Julie Inkster, Yani Tseng and Na Yeon Choi, setting up a second consecutive Sunday coronation in an LPGA tournament for the 20-year-old.
The leggy, long-hitting phenom took her incredible round in stride (via AP/NBC Sports):

“It was a fun round today, I have to say,” Wie said.

You don’t say? Fun, indeed. And boy, do I know how that goes. Now, I don’t want to pat myself on the back or toot my own horn too much here, but I have come close to hitting a 28 before myself…the only difference between that glorious day on the links for me is unlike Wie, I has to skip the par 3s and 5s to get that score.
Pretty much the same, though.

A 28 on the front nine? Big deal – I could do that. If the damn windmill wasn’t so unpredictable. And who knew you had to hit in the dragon’s MOUTH?
