The Tiger-Woods-Takes-Manhattan rumor may finally be dead

Sep 2, 2010, 3:30 PM EST

Of course you’ve heard the rumor about Tiger Woods buying an apartment in downtown Manhattan; despite being debunked by several sources, including this blog, it seems to have taken on a life of its own. People are saying that they’ve actually seen Tiger unloading boxes from a car and carrying them into the building in question on Hudson Street (pictured) … and even that he was seen petting a neighbor’s puppy. It’s become kind of the urban version of the Bigfoot myth. Well, now we may be able to put this thing to rest. The New York Post, of all papers, has become the latest voice of reason, reporting that the whole thing may have been a hoax by a real estate agent to drum up business for his property. And he needs the publicity, according to the Post. The place is actually a dump.

“No way Tiger would live there,” one broker told The Post. “It’s an ’80s conversion, run-down, with leaky ceilings.” If it really was Tiger who was spotted moving boxes in from a BMW, brokers say he might have been helping a girlfriend. “It would have to be a mistress he doesn’t care about.” Another broker said, “If he does live there, it means his wife took every penny he has and he’s at the end of his rope.” Non-real-estate sources are equally skeptical and point out that Woods has always gone out of his way to avoid the city and stayed on his yacht, The Privacy, when the US Open was played at Bethpage. “He hates it in New York,” said one observer. “Why would he come here when he needs his privacy more than ever?”

Too bad. I had this mental image of Kramer bursting through Tiger’s door at 11 p.m., asking if he can borrow his swimming trunks.
