Free the Red Foxes? Dance group banned from Turkey's World Championship games

Sep 1, 2010, 2:00 PM EST

The Red Foxes are a female dance team from the Ukraine, and let me tell you, the Ukraine is not weak. Currently they’re performing for all games at the FIBA world championship in Turkey, but are also available for school sporting events and bar mitzvahs. However, controversy has reared its aesthetically-challenged head, as it often does, in the world championship host nation. Turkey, citing Muslim law, has banned the dance team from performing at games involving them.

The Red Foxes, a professional dance team from the Ukraine, will still perform at other games in Ankara, where the host team is playing.

FIBA, basketball’s governing body, says in a statement the ban was not its decision. Secretary general Patrick Baumann says he wants entertainment to be part of the games, but “if it needs a little bit of adjustment that is fine with us.”

There are many Muslims in Turkey and Islam prohibits women from exposing their skin in public.

Performers wore long pants Wednesday during a game between the United States and Iran. Iranian officials had turned their backs when the dancers performed in earlier games.

So it’s not like dancers are an essential part of the game; I don’t see a problem with skipping the sideline cuties for the entirety of the tournament. The point of such competition is to bring nations together; why alienate countries such as Iran and Turkey unnecessarily?
I’m sure there were plenty of women in the crowd, however; and I’m sure they all weren’t wearing burkas. How do Muslims regard that?

This doesn’t make sense at all. The Red Foxes performed at Turkish basketball events many times before. I think Turkish basketball federation’s president Turgay Demirel is fawning on the Islamist government whose members are attending Turkey’s games.

“Currently they’re performing for all games at the FIBA world championship in Turkey” Ofcourse!!! – the team’s coach is the wife of the director of FIBA

Well, you look like some foxy American girls, who are very attractive and who enjoy having a good swinging time!

Indeed! While we’re visiting, we can stone a woman to death who has been accused of adultery after being raped. Let’s go watch a female circumcision, performed only to make discourage a woman from enjoying sex. Unity, damn it!
I really love how we are being told to tolerate the most intolerant of cultures.
