Obama skips church for golf yet again

Aug 23, 2010, 10:00 AM EST

Look, if there’s anything that proves President Obama isn’t a Muslim, it’s the fact that he skipped church to go play golf. That’s as American as a fife and drum on the Fourth of July. But despite the fact that Ward Cleaver tried to get away with the same thing in practically every episode of Leave it to Beaver, conservative-leaning blogs are in a holy uproar of Obama’s frequent golf outings. Example: he’s played 43 rounds of golf — 23 of them played on a Sunday. That’s more than Bush in both terms! That’s about every other week. How Christian. NOT.

The Obama’s are on a 10-day vacation at Martha’s Vineyard. From the Boston Herald:

Instead of attending church services at one of the dozens and dozens of quaint, island Christian churches yesterday morning, the commander in chief hit Our Lady of the Fairways, aka the Vineyard Golf Club, yet again, to play 18.

It was Obama’s second outing to the posh, private golf club since landing Thursday on The Rock. The prez teed off at 8:30 a.m. under cloudy, drizzly skies. A perfect day to be inside. Like, say, in church!

Now you’d think, with polls showing that one in five Americans believe Obama is a Muslim — and with the furor over the president’s flip-flops on the Ground Zero mosque — that his White House handlers might have orchestrated a nice little photo op of the first family doing a little vacation worshiping yesterday morning.

Because, despite the administration’s insistence that Barry is a Christian and that he prays daily, most Americans have noticed that Obama rarely attends church. That’s a noticeable departure from previous presidents, such as George W. Bush and Clinton, who were on their knees every Sunday.

Of course, the last time Obama had a regular church, it was Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright fame, and, well, we all know how that turned out.

The president’s handlers have said Obama doesn’t attend services regularly because he doesn’t want to be “hugely disruptive to congregations.” This is apparently not an issue on the golf course.

Fox News has already made its position known on Obama’s separation of church and links. But more telling to me is what the Obamas did after the outing. The family visited a bookstore in Vineyard named A Bunch of Grapes:

Obama purchased “Freedom,” a new novel by National Book Award winner Jonathan Franzen; “Tinkers,” by Georgetown author Paul Harding; and “A Few Corrections,” by Brad Leithauser . The girls bought “To Kill A Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee, John Steinbeck’s “The Red Pony” and “The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins.

Nation in good hands. Carry on.

  2. Ukman - Aug 23, 2010 at 4:26 PM

No and why would I as my name suggests I am not a Yank!
I would not serve unless there was real danger to my country.
The real heroes are doctors nurses and Lance Armstrong.
You lot do tend to fail to realise that bravery and heroism are not the same thing.

  3. Honky - Aug 23, 2010 at 4:26 PM

Being a Muslim ain’t the only thing that is going to stop us from voting for him again!

  4. Ukman - Aug 23, 2010 at 4:29 PM

But being a Democrat is a reason to vote for him.
The Republicans are likely to bring about a nuclear war as they love to invade other countries!

I’m still amazed that this guy won by such a huge margin, considering he had never really done anything to warrant even running. I guess it shows how the American public can be easily duped by someone with charisma, especially the demographic that Obama carried. That being said, don’t you think the President works hard enough that if he can get some days on the golf course, regardless of what he misses to do it, we should cut him some slack? These guys work 16-18 hours/day, 7 days/week, and we have issues with him teeing it up? Any idea how many rounds Eisenhower played when he was Prez? Enough to get a tree named after him on #17 at Augusta…..

  6. gulf - Aug 23, 2010 at 5:14 PM

People just pissed because his handicap is lower than theirs.

I have this to say to the hypocrites over at the GOP:
I can find passages, verses, and quotes from the bible telling us to respect and treat well our fellow man, even “aliens your land” (hence, illegals..and no im not making this up), yet I have never seen one where it says “thou is not religious if thou does not attend church regularly”. When it does, ill shut up. Until then however, the crooked arse GOP needs to because im sick of their hypocracy and lies.

  8. RB - Aug 23, 2010 at 6:05 PM

um, you spelled misinformed wrong and you are calling someone an idiot?

  9. Yabecoo - Aug 23, 2010 at 6:27 PM

How about being a self centered A$$hole? Is that grounds enough for not voting for this incompetent, under qualified charlatan?

  10. Adam - Aug 24, 2010 at 4:56 AM

Making a spelling mistake or typo doesnt make me an idiot.
The fact is you must agree with what I say to only pick up on that!

  11. bak - Aug 24, 2010 at 10:02 AM

While devout Muslims pray daily, Friday and not Sunday is considered the Muslim holy day so ‘Bam playing golf on Sunday doesn’t wash. But does he play on Friday’s? Hmmmm……

  12. Robj - Aug 24, 2010 at 1:12 PM

    You said:
“If you believe in an all powerful, bearded, robe toting superhero who lives above us floating up the clouds directing everything that happens here on earth, well then I believe you are a little crazy and not very intelligent.
    Just my opinion.”
Bearded? Robe-toting? Superhero? floating up the clouds?
For someone speaking about ‘intelligence’, these are some pretty silly statements you’re making.
Don’t try to condescend. You aren’t making anyone look silly but yourself.

One true sign of a christian believer is that he/she will desire to fellowship together with other believers (sort of a birds flock together kind of thing). It is biblical. If the Bible is Gods revelation to us I would think that he/we would want to follow it. In church we find fellowship, worship and teaching; three things we need to grow in our christian life and to draw us closer to Christ. If I am a firefighter I go to the fire station. If i am a banker I go to the bank. If I am a Christian believer I desire to regularly go to church. It is at the least an outward sign that I am serious about my faith. Golf every other Sunday morning is not consistent with living out ones Christan faith.

It’s OK…..he never misses Friday prayers!!!!!!!!At the new mosque in the White House or his personal Iman that travels with him!

  15. latoya - Sep 4, 2010 at 12:17 PM

Wow you guys are really upset! Get over it! I work for a Muslim family and they are some of the most hard working, respectful, nice people i have ever met! Are their any true Christians…I don’t think so! So shut the hell up and mind your own business and just maybe the world will be a little better off!

  16. Angela - Sep 8, 2010 at 4:00 PM

Are people really this stupid? It is not that he missed church, it is that while unemployment is at an alarming rate of 10%, healthcare reform is causing employers and small business not to hire, tax reform on hold and the people who have all the money refuse to spend and how is our beloved President taking care of the American people?????? Basically telling us to go ____ ourselves because he has a vacation, wife has european trip on Americans, basketball, dancing in the whitehouse, or a golf game or suing the state of Arizona for doing excatly what the Feds say we can and shuld do.
Who does this guy think he is???? Ohe he knows who he is. The guy who will single-handedly take down the American economy. Go obama:(
You and your family must be so pleased. So are you embarrassed to be an American now??? you should be.

You are just a loser! Why can’t write something more important? Most of these politicians are hypocrites! They go to church every sunday, but have no love. Obama is showing He is a christian,he is doing things to help the poor and downtrodden, as Jesus did. Your love for your fellowman determined your love for God. Jesus is a friend of the poor. Let your light so shine before men.

Umm, what “uproar”. A conservative blogger writes about Obama playing golf was called an “uproar” by an outofbounds nbc writer. No uproar, just needed to fill his 2500 word a day quota.
    What’s Obama’s index?

If going to church was the qualification of being a christian then why did Yeshua even bother dying on the cross. If anything this kind of outrage is that of the Pharisees whom judged according to their traditions. Yeshua did not rise on Sunday, that is a pagan tradition. We must look at what is produced.
While you may not agree with the methods he is utilizing, he is looking out for the uninsured and those in need. A christian would not have an issue with helping those in need, we are our brother’s keeper.
To disagree about policy is one thing, but to simply judge one by not going to church puts those who judge in grave danger. Don’t judge lest ye be judged. Remember tis the righteous who will judge, and all fall short of the grace of God. Dare I say there are those in church every Sunday whom commit sins of judgement and hatred to those they deem as “sinners”. No one is in a position to judge another.
We were granted free will. The right to choose. If someone does something you do not like do not judge them nor persecute them, for vengeance and justice is YHWH’s.
The scriptures would not have Yeshua saying “you will say Lord, Lord” and he says it will “be that I never knew you”. Not all who profess his name are of Him, many in church will still face judgement. The Pharisees put Yeshua to death for they were threatened by him and his message. You can have religion and be spiritually dead.

liz, I agree with you about ADAM. I liked your comments about “live and die happy, die and pray for you.” So true. ADAM, I’ve been a member of MENSA since 1975, well within the 2 percentile. Do I believe in the living God? Am I a Christian who believes that Christ died for our sins with his blood being shed for us? I am absolutely a believer in Him!
Should Obama just play gold and not attend church, that decision is solely up to him with the consequences being only on his shoulders, not ours. We can only pray for him.
I to used to play golf on Sunday until I came to the realization that there was something so much more important. God. I became a Stephen Minister last year (commissioned, not ordained) in order to be a Christian care giver to people who needed attention due to issues beyond their control. I not only help them by listening and showing that I care, but they help me in me process. Life is an ongoing process, isn’t it.

For Pete’s sake! What is wrong with you people? Haven’t you ever missed church? “judge not lest ye be judged”, or do some of you just believe in specific parts of the Bible?
To be believers in Christ and his perfect life, you don’t act like HIM. Making judgements and snide remarks about someone’s faith or lack of it,is not what Jesus did.

Florida, I think “your spool is unwinding”.
