Jeez, Gregg Doyel, why don't you tell us how you really feel about Jay Mariotti?
Aug 22, 2010, 10:00 AM EDT
One person who is apparently thrilled with Jay Mariotti’s fall from, um, grace, after being arrested and charged with a felony early Saturday morning is CBS Sports columnist Gregg Doyel. If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Doyel and his body of work, he is a provocateur of sorts, always willing to stir the pot to see how many people he can rile up with acerbic brand of wit and cantankerous personality. To be honest, despite his talents as a writer, he used to annoy me, but I have grown to appreciate his style, especially when he really gets going with epic rants via his Twitter account.
Well, Doyel was in rare form yesterday on Twitter, gleefully wallowing in the mess Mariotti allegedly made of his life and career.
I mean he really tore into Mariotti. It escalated quickly…I mean, it really got out of hand fast.
Yesterday was not the first time Doyel has gone after Mariotti and his sanctimonious ways courtesy of his Twitter account. Last March, Doyel absolutely hammered Mariotti for allegedly writing a column about a NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament game played in Salt Lake City without actually attending the game.
But that was child’s play compared to the vitriol Doyel unloaded on Mariotti yesterday. To wit:
Only a coward hits a woman. So you can’t possibly believe Mariotti would hit a woman unless you believe he’s a coward. Oh, wait …
And this one:
Mariotti accused of hitting his girlfriend? I can’t believe it. Mariotti has a girlfriend??!?!
Oh, and this one:
Mariotti in jail on $50,000 bail. Mariotti in jail on $50,000 bail. Mariotti … sorry. Please, nobody pinch me. This is the best dream ever
Can’t forget about this tweet:
Anyone else, and I’d wonder out of curiosity how Mariotti might react to my rant. But since he only gets arrested for hitting women …
Ooh! And this one, too:
Mariotti behind bars with the scum of the earth. And the scum of the earth sees him and says, ‘There goes the neighborhood.’
Finally, Doyel decided enough was enough and it was time to ease up on Mariotti:
Friend of mine just asked me to stop. Said Mariotti’s had enough. Said Mariotti has teenage sons. I shudder for them, but I’ll stop now.
Well, for a few hours, Doyel managed to hold back, but soon enough, he was back at it…
If Jay Mariotti lost his career last night, what can I say? It couldn’t happen to a bigger douchebag
And then there’s this:
Anyone know who posted Mariotti’s bail? I’d like to egg that person’s house
Yeah, I think you get the point. And I only highlighted some of his tweets. There was plenty more where that came from. Yeesh. I suppose we have to give Doyel credit for his persistence.

so, this article is about being an internet tough-guy? The passive-aggressive comments from Doyel suggest an inferiority complex. He’s impotent except for the occasional opportunity to rant on some blog that shows up between the car ads and the obituaries (Metaphorically speaking)

Jay Mariotti is arrested for domestic violence and Gregg Doyel manages to make himself look like a far bigger jerk.
It’s as if he’s obsessed with Mariotti. It made his day. He couldn’t stop tweeting about it.
Does he have no life?
