LeBron: 'Even my own family gets spoiled at times watching me'
Aug 17, 2010, 10:00 AM EDT
I believe my recent advice to LeBron James was to lie low and not do interviews until the season starts. What was I talking about?! LeBron did a big interview with GQ, excerpts of which were released on its web site today, and it worked out perfectly! Except for the several quotes where he ends up looking like an ass.
“I love our fans. Cleveland fans are awesome. But I mean, even my family gets spoiled at times watching me doing things that I do, on and off the court.”
Egomaniacal Douchebag alert. Also, about Dan Gilbert:
“I don’t think he ever cared about LeBron. My mother always told me: ‘You will see the light of people when they hit adversity. You’ll get a good sense of their character.’ Me and my family have seen the character of that man.”
Did he really just refer to himself in the third person?
More excerpts, as LeBron talks with GQ writer J.R. Moehringer:
“It’s not far, but it is far. And Clevelanders, because they were the bigger-city kids when we were growing up, looked down on us…. So we didn’t actually like Cleveland. We hated Cleveland growing up. There’s a lot of people in Cleveland we still hate to this day.”
On Charles Barkley criticizing him last week:
“Charles was probably trying to be funny. It wasn’t funny to me.”
Someone’s in denial (Barkley was, of course, totally serious). Can’t wait to see what else he said in the September issue, previewed here in GQ’s Lebron Can Take the Heat section.
Bronny, you need a press secretary, and you need him right now. I cannot imagine people hating you more.

One thing that Gilbert said that seems dead on was the comment that there were a lot of people protecting LBJ during the Cavs years. This kept the public from seeing the true Lebron all those years. I think we’re seeing him now. Does this get me on his mentally organized pay back list?

When you refer to yourself in the third person, you are a certifiable weirdo.

He has it all but yet he has nothing but some hangers on who will suck him dry of his fame and money. Poor man child. I used to like him as a person. He was a great talent and looked to be a fun guy. But all that has changed. Same with Tiger.

Actually, Jordan is the King, Kobe’s more like the Prince and Lebron’s looking a lot like the court Jester!

Geez, why the piling on… Lebron is a basketball player. It doesn’t take people skills, political savy or some type of mathematic intellegence. He plays a game. Lebron had an opportunity to leave the only team he has played for after 7 years. Why do fans expect so much from these players. I don’t look for Lebron to say anything compelling or expect him to not show us all how he spends his time and/or money. He is essentially a very rich young man and he acts just like that. So let him do his thang.

I think it’s pretty egotistical to think that your advice to Lebron matters, Rick

If you thought I was serious, you’re obviously not a regular reader. Hopefully we can change that! I’ll mention that to LeBron tonight when I see him at bingo.
