The Women's Baseball World Cup: come for the baseball, leave in terror after player is shot

women's baseball cup.jpgOn a baseball diamond, I’m familiar with the concept of a seeing-eye single, but a seeing-eye stray bullet? That’s kooky talk!
Unfortunately, such a scenario played out on Friday in Caracas, Venezuela at the Women’s World Cup, when Cheuk Woon Yee, a third base-, um, person for Hong Kong was struck in the calf with a bullet during a game against the Netherlands as she was making her way out to third base in the top of 4th inning. And here athletes competing in a World Cup event thought the incessant drone of hundreds of vuvuzelas was annoying.
Play in the tournament which features 11 international teams, was promptly suspended, but Venezuela’s Sports Ministry was expected to announce a revised schedule at some point yesterday.

Elias Jaua, the Vice President of the Sports Ministry, acknowledged that Cheuk Woon Yee was struck by “an object similar to a stray bullet” (Similar? Either it was a stray bullet or it wasn’t – or are heavily-armed Venezuelans who blindly shoot guns loading the chamber with candy corn?), added later (via Reuters Canada):

“We are evaluating the conditions to continue this important event,” Jaua told state television. “We call on the Venezuelan public to unite in defense of our nation … we hope the whole country can help us explain what has happened.”

Let me help Jaua out with solving this conundrum: some careless yahoo fired their weapon near the stadium and the bullet, struck an innocent girl in the leg. Mystery solved.
Although probably shaken – getting shot in the leg while running out to take your position on the baseball field is probably pretty low on the list of things a baseball player is concerned with when playing, Woon Yee was taken to a hospital, treated and was back at the team hotel a short time later, and according to a statement issued by the Sports Ministry, she said it was nice to see her teammates: “What a pleasure to see them again … I’m pretty well.”
Also a pleasure: participating in a baseball tournament without getting shot. That’s pretty neat, too.
