Did a blog force the Dodgers to change their Matt Kemp '80s Night poster?

Aug 2, 2010, 3:00 PM EDT

For all of you who were hoping to score a sweet Matt Kemp-dressed-as-Michael-Jackson poster on Friday at Dodger Stadium’s 80′s Night, sorry, but you’re out of luck. Not only is Billie Jean not your lover, but the poster seen on the left here will not be in your backpack. The Dodgers have had second thoughts about dressing one of their players as the King of Pop, and the word is that Kemp himself wasn’t very comfortable with it. Now what’s that young Dodger fan in your family going to hang on his wall? Elton John at the Honda Center?
The Dodgers instead will be distributing the poster seen on the right, which features Kemp in a traditional baseball photo; but has nothing to do with the 1980s. Even the logo, The King of Swing, brings to mind the 1940s rather than the ’80s. So, yeah, Dodgers; here’s something they often said in the ’80s: You screwed the pooch.

This story began when the blog Vin Scully Is My Homeboy dug up the Dodgers’ original ’80s Night poster, featuring Kemp as you see him on the left. They ran a post on it on Wednesday, which we at Out of Bounds picked up. The Kemp poster quickly made the rounds on the Internets from there.
The Dodgers weren’t too happy with all the attendant mockery, apparently. VSIMHB interviewed John SooHoo, the photographer who took the Kemp/MJ photo, who said:

“He (Kemp) was shy about doing it but gave me a few poses but was uncomfortable doing it. I hate seeing him getting ripped in blogs for doing something he was asked to do by the club.”

So the Dodgers switched posters. I would have liked to have been at the original meeting with Kemp, however. “Hey Matt, we think it would be great if you dressed like Michael Jackson so we can make a poster of it and give it out to kids during a game.” Kemp: “Do I have to wear the glove?” Dodgers: “Yes.” And Kemp agreed? Wow. Good thing they didn’t ask him to dress as an effete British fox hunting dandy. Oh … um, wait …
Even more surprising is the fact that, apparently, Dodgers executives read sports blogs.

why would Kemp not want to be associated with the most recognized and fantastic entertainer of all time? People without TV or radios know who Michael Jackson is, but not Kemp. It could have been good for him. Oh well…his choice.

Kemp who??????????? I have never heard of him before,it’s funny if
little babies know who Michael Jackson is, do they know this Kemp guy? I don’t think so I would have been honored to dress like him.
    oh well his loss.
