What’s the most difficult feat in sports? Hitting a Major League curveball is up there, as is planning a retirement party for Brett Favre. Stopping a penalty kick in soccer is also challenging; most goalies simply guess where the ball is headed, and hope they get there in time.
Now meet D.C. United U17 goalkeeper Dakota Niedermeier, who stopped five straight penalty kicks in Thursday’s final of the SUM U-17 Cup, a tournament for MLS academy teams. After D.C. United and Real Salt Lake played to a scoreless tie, each converted their first four PKs, until the goalies got stingy. In addition to Niedermeyer’s five saves, RSL stopped (a couple missed the goal entirely) four shots. The player to finally convert and win the match? Niedermeyer himself.
