FIU blogger abruptly quits job, but throws epic hissy fit first

Jul 25, 2010, 11:30 AM EDT

PetePelegrin.jpgPictured to the right is one Pete Pelegrin, who, up until earlier this week, was a sportswriter for The Miami Herald, covering the FIU beat for the paper. Pelegrin abruptly resigned from his post, for reasons he bitterly rehashed in a venomous and vitriolic screed which may be one of the most epic journalistic F-U’s I have ever seen. He didn’t just burn a buttload of bridges with this post, he went full-on The Bridge Over The River Kwai on his former employers. Among his list of grievances:
* his photo was removed from the FIU blog logo and changed its slogan
* the paper didn’t place as high a priority on FIU sports as it did on the Hurricanes and Dolphins
Come again? He couldn’t have possibly been being completely serious and of sober mind when he wrote this diatribe, could he? Here’s what he wrote about his photo being removed:

Hell, they even took my photo and name out from the front of the blog and replaced it with some hokey logo – not even the FIU sports logo. At least, get the FIU sports logo right if you’re going to do this.

Further, should it come as a surprise that the Herald placed a higher priority on coverage of the Hurricanes and Dolphins, because, you know, people actually care about those programs? This Pelegrin guy is a hoot, that’s for sure. A clearly burned-out one with an inflated sense of his place in the sports department’s pecking order, but a hoot nonetheless.
Of course, The Miami Herald promptly took down the post upon seeing it, but not before The Wiz of Odds snapped a screenshot for our collective enjoyment. Said screenshot after the jump.

Jeez, Pelegrin: do you want some cheese with your whine? What a baby. Here’s the deal: blogging isn’t for the mild-mannered or weak-willed. You need nerves of steel, a sharp wit and a comfortable butt cushion to ply this trade day in and day out. But as it is the case with any other profession or vocation, utilizing the company’s platform and reach to mercilessly bash it is never a good idea. Future prospective employers will likely not look upon such blatant disregard of respect and tact too fondly.

    Hey Weed!
    can you read????
here is a guy who got the shaft and did a little ranting. no where is he whining, being vitriolic or acrimonious. he is merely giving his perspective of the situation he was involved in. he obviously cares about FIU and took pride in his coverage of the school. nowhere does he equate the popularity of UM to FIU.
Did you even bother to read the article?
and I might ad, he displays character you can only dream of. you are obviously just a boot licking sycophant who will bend over for his masters, smiling all the while, and insisting that the shit you are eating is really prime rib.
now take your “acerbic” wit, your box of crayons , and come back when you are even one tenth the journalist Pelegrin is.

As a former Sun Belt Conference media guy myself, I can see where Mr. Pelegrin reached his Popeye-the-Sailor “That’s all I can stands, I can’t stands no more!” moment. It’s not an easy gig anywhere in the league; the travel ranges from Miami to Denver, with such hard-to-get-to destinations as Jonesboro, Ark., Bowling Green, Ky., Monroe, La., Troy, Ala., and Lafayette, La. Was his rant “over the top”? Probably… but it sounds like he had several legitimate gripes with the paper, too.
Heck, I was lucky enough to work for Arkansas State University; in Jonesboro, the Red Wolves are the big sports story. It’s awfully easy to be critical of a guy who brought some passion to his gig… at the very least, Mr. Pelegrin signed his actual name to his post!

If this jackhole had any talent for writing in the first place, he wouldn’t be blogging about a sports team that would be runner-up to my 9yr old daughter’s soccer team. What you have here is a man who has over-rated his importance in the world and is PO’ed that someone shined a little bit of reality onto his delusion. FIU? What the hell is FIU? And, seriously, why would anyone really care? Now, Dave tries to talk about a man’s character in the same sentence as he shows his complete lack of character. Not exactly ironic, just plain stupid.

Me thinks the retarded writer will be looking for a new career…just as well as his writing sucks

You can’t burn the bridge to truth. This blog title seriously exaggerates the tone of the Pete piece. Pete is angry, and maybe he doesn’t get that FIU isn’t UM or the Fins, but his passion is true and the rant is not all that outlandish. i like a little challenge to authority.

    rob, rob, rob…..
reading comprehension is obviously a skill you do not currently posses. you did not grasp the nuance of Peligrens literary effort, nor am I confident that you have the ability to do so in the first place.
a person who has a passion for his job should not be ridiculed or maligned; they should be recognized for a charatcer trait, that, again, you obviously lack. you demonstrate your own lack of self confidence by attacking others who are clearly more erudite and sophistcated that you.
now, i suggest you take yourself over to the local adult education center and sign yourself up for some remedial reading lessons. your momma should of told you that growing up illiterate is no way to be.
now be off with you. you are starting to bore me.

That’s right people, shoot the messenger. I’ve known dozens of “Pelegrin’s” over my career. Entitled debutantes who know better than anyone else. The bottom line is Pelegrin abused his position with one foot out the door. His lack of professionalism is laid out for all to see … all you need do is look. He lost perspective – FIU compared to The U or the Dolphins is a joke – which anyone can readily see. Of course he is out of the business. No one in their right mind would hire this self righteous jaghole for any credible publication.
