* Sure Hope Damon Evans Told His Wife The Truth. Damon Evans was the athletic director at the University of Georgia, until he was recently fired for a DUI (the fact that Evans appears on a recorded PSA announcement at games imploring fans not to drive drunk probably didn’t help his cause). Also not helping his cause? His former institution releasing records of 250 text messages he exchanged with the woman who was with him in the car on the night of the DUI, who just so happens to not be his wife. Ouch. * 11 Notre Dame Athletes Arrested for Underage Drinking. Always an institution that prides themselves on tradition, Notre Dame keeps perhaps the most important college tradition alive — underage drinking. Nate Montana, backup Irish QB and son of football legend Joe, was among 11 Notre Dame athletes arrested at a party bust on Friday night. [Sporting News]
* Dean Smith Memory Loss: UNC Coaching Legend’s Health Addressed. UNC hero and collegiate coaching legend Dean Smith was once renowned for his impressive memory — he could recall the name of every player who had played for him during his long, long career on the sidelines of college basketball. Unfortunately, Smith has been diagnosed with “progressive neurocognitive disorder that affects his memory,” which on some levels sounds like a medical term for “old age.” Here’s hoping Mr. Smith has a full recovery, or at least has someone explain to him why the Tarheels are now coached by Huckleberry Hound. * Larry Fitzgerald: Inspiration to Amputees Everywhere. As a Pitt alum, Larry Fitzgerald is probably my favorite athlete in sports right now (DeJuan “Grizzly” Blair being a close second), but even I’m not a big enough fan to have his likeness on an appendage, prosthetic or not. However it seems that others are, as one such fan had their prosthetic autographed by Larry Fitz himself. Awesome. Now can we please retroactively award him the Heisman that Chris Weinke stole?
