We are all witnesses…to the dismantling of LeBron's mural in Cleveland

Cavs owner Mr. Dan Gilbert: Tear down this mural!
While close (at least given the coverage of the event), it wasn’t quite on par with when President Ronald Reagan implored Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall – for one thing, David Hasselhoff didn’t even bother to show up – but when workers began deconstructing the 10-story tall “We Are All Witnesses” LeBron James mural on Ontario Street in downtown Cleveland, we noticed. In a way, much like when the Wall came down, we now have tangible, architectural evidence of the seismic shift of just what occurred over the past week. Sure, what LeBron’s exodus from Cleveland lacked in geopolitical significance, it more than made up for with its disconcerting display of shameful spectacle.
But what happens from this point forward? What say you, Nike spokesman guy?
“We are removing the LeBron James Witness mural in downtown Cleveland and expect the process to be completed within a few days,” Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.
Wilkins said he does not yet know what the company’s plans are with the gigantic sign, which includes the phrase: “We Are All Witnesses” over James’ image.
On Friday, several fans gathered on the sidewalk outside the Landmark Office Tower as workers prepared to remove the billboard.
“My mom wanted us to get a picture of it before they brought it down,” said Kayla Mack of Norwalk, Ohio. “It’s very bittersweet.”
Bittersweet, indeed. While it wasn’t a celebration in any way, shape or form, I truly believe the presence of David Hasselhoff during the event certainly would have helped lighten the mood. How couldn’t it? That guy can work a crowd, man.
