Two gored in annual Running of the Idiots

Jul 8, 2010, 3:30 PM EDT

Here’s to all the people out there who consider the annual San Fermin Festival’s Running of the Bulls as some sort of Bucket List adventure. Keep thinking that. Most of the world — and certainly the bulls — have a much different view of this activity. We all see it as an entertaining way of getting rid of the stupid people. We’re culling the herd, as it were; eliminating a few of the lower-IQ set. Note the pajama-clad moron to the right. Bull: “Here’s that horn up the ass you ordered, sir. May I get you anything else? The hoof in the groin is especially good today.”
My reaction to today’s run: What, no vuvuzelas?

From the Associated Press:

TV images showed the first goring with the runner being hit in the chest and hurled to the cobblestone ground like a ragdoll. The young man stayed on the ground seemingly totally dazed.

Navarra Hospital’s Dr. Fernando Boneta said one man was seriously injured after being gored in the thorax, while a second man was gored in the left leg but was in better condition. The runners’ names and nationalities were not immediately available.

Four more people were hospitalized in Pamplona for injuries, mostly bruises sustained in falls during the run.

During Wednesday’s run — the second of eight bull runs held during the nine-day street festival — several people were knocked to the ground and some were trampled by the animals weighing more than 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms), but there were no gorings.

An 18-year-old runner from Melbourne, Australia, suffered three fractured vertebrae and was in serious condition at a hospital, while a 20-year-old Spanish man received an eye injury but was in less serious condition, the Navarra regional government said, without saying how they were hurt.

Never forget this, folks: We’re all just one Running of the Bulls — or one ESPN “Decision” special — from being total douchebags.

riiiiggghhhttt….cause why you’re blogging half a world away, these people are living life to the fullest (at least the ones not gored to death)!

Scared shitless and running for life – that’s a perspective that I did not consider for living life to the fullest.

Ah, you’re chickenshits. It was great back in 1983 when I ran. Looks
likte the cobblestone has been replaced by concrete blocks, a lot safer if they are wet.

Wow……..that looks a little shakey to me. I hope these people are OK!

lets give it up to all the people who haven’t ever done anything that scares them. bravo, i wish you a peaceful life with no stories to tell.

All you kitties on here afraid of everything. Stay at home and make sure you wear gloves when you read the newspaper. Might get a papercut…

But why does an innocent animal have to be involved? Why can’t these people, say, “run with the boulders” on the side of a steep mountain?

When I think of things that give me the “thrill of a lifetime”, my thoughts do not immediately jump to something like running in front of a 1100 lb creature who cares not how fragil the human body is compared to his mass.
While I can get with the concept of “living life dangerously”, taking a chance on the fact that this little stunt could at best leave you paralyzed for the rest of your life, or shoveling up daisies in someone’s cemetary. I just don’t see it worth the bragging rights years down the road if you survive.

What an interesting perspective on the Festival of San Fermin. As one has attended the festival and taken part in the festivities, including running with the bulls, I must say the people running aren’t the douchebags. The writer is. I find that those in life who have never experienced something are often the ones who pass judgement the quickest. I can only surmise this is the case here as well. I traveled to Pamplona. I ran. I was joined by a doctor, a dentist for the United States military, a professional photographer, and a university professor. Hardly what one would consider idiots.
Either way. Pass your judgements ladies and gentlemen. I’ve run the path. I can at least speak from behind the podium of experience. By the way, it was one hell of a run.

  13. Rick Chandler - Jul 9, 2010 at 7:09 PM

Rick: “run with the boulders” on the side of a steep mountain?
