Paul has chosen … and it’s for real, this time. Exhibiting a bit of showmanship by hamming it up for the cameras before he picked, the soothsaying cephalopod finally settled on a tasty mussel in his tank, which was adorned with the flag of … Spain. Yes, for the second time in this World Cup, Paul has abandoned his home team, Germany, and forseen victory for another country. The octopus has a 5-0 record in World Cup predictions so far.
Dramatic video following the jump.
From Sky News:
Two plastic boxes with the flag of each country on the front had been placed into his tank at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre.
With food in both boxes to attract Paul, it is then a matter of waiting until he opens one of them to determine his predicted winner.
On this occasion, he initially went straight for Spain’s container.
German hopes were raised as he moved and began to hover over his homeland’s flag, but the indecision was brief as he went with his first instinct.
Scandal rocked the mollusk community on Monday as someone faked a photo of Paul picking Spain over Germany, and sent it out on the Internets. Now, however, Paul seems to have chosen Spain for real.
(Later that day):
Officer: “Do you know how fast you were going?”
Me: “I’m on my way to Vegas on orders from my octopus!”

Why settle for having an Octopus pick for you when Soul Whisperer has the true winner of the World Cup? Yes I know it’s a ‘joke’ and buzz story (I get that) but seriously, there is someone who can really see these things! Check it out for yourself, it’s all there.
She posted all of her Finals winners (quarters, semis and finals winners) on July 2, 2010 at:
http://blogs.sport24.co.za/SoulWhisperer
So far she’s 4 for 4 ( all accurate) in her finals predictions alone-And she also picks out various ‘details’ in a game and a team’s mental climate and tell you ‘why’ a team will win or lose.
Her blog is “Soul Meets Soccer in the World Cup”.
Questions/comments welcome. Enjoy the games!

Sorry Mr. Octopus, your Spain pick is off, whereas Soul Whisperer’s accuracy just keeps growing more arms! She’s now 5 for 5-Can you beat that record?
Leave that poor creature alone and let it return to it’s home in the sea! If you’re serious about having accurate predictions and insider info. on the World Cup games, go to where there’s a solid record.
Also interesting pre-game analysis and details:

Germany is not just physical, they’re “intelligent” and their team cohesive strength goes well beyond that of Spain’s. Soul Whisperer

Hi All,
Superstition is a real force in sports and it does play a part, I made the error of minimizing it’s role in these games! It seems Paul the Octopus game Germany a real fright.
See how a creature’s prediction and a superstition can sneakily enter into the consciousness of a a team and bring up doubts and fears unnecessarily, creating a breakdown in performance. Where was the German team who defeated Argentina, England, Ghana and Australia? They were a shadow of their former selves in this game with Spain and playing in defense and fear, not strength. Why?
See post game analysis on the Octopus affect and the affect of superstition on a team as well as latest Finals games predictions, insight and analysis. How is German doing now? What is their mental climate coming into their next game with Uruguay?
