UFC fighter War Machine to hone his craft in prison

Jul 2, 2010, 11:00 AM EDT

If you want to see our old pal War Machine engage in some ultimate fighting maneuvers you’d better commit a felony, because the only place he’ll be fighting in the near future is in the clink. War Machine — formerly Jon Koppenhaver (he had his named changed legally) — was sentenced to a year in jail on Thursday for violating his probation by beating up a bunch of people in a San Diego bar in March.
So if there are any San Diego jailbirds reading Out of Bounds, you’d better employ the buddy system if you’re sleeping near Machine, because he is not a nice dude.

Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor War Machine has been sentenced to a year in jail for violating probation after he assaulted people at two San Diego bars. War Machine pleaded guilty Thursday to two felony counts of assault and to violating probation in a previous assault case. He has a professional fight scheduled for July 9 and was ordered to surrender for jail a week later.

Prosecutors say the 28-year-old fighter knocked away some bottles and glasses on a bar, cutting a bartender. He also got into a scuffle and punched a security guard.

If I were War Machine I’d use the ‘I was just trying to knock the bottles and glasses into a nearby recycle bin and missed, I’m an environmentalist! Plus the security guard is in favor of global warming, I could see it in his eyes’ defense. I should have gone to law school.
