Pacquiao camp gives Mayweather two-week deadline

Jul 1, 2010, 11:00 AM EDT

Hey, we have half of a fight! But watching Manny Pacquiao shadow box does not make for a good pay-per-view event, so now it just remains to get Floyd Mayweather to show up. Reports are that Pacquiao has reached an agreement in principle to fight Mayweather for the WBO welterweight title, agreeing to pretty much all the conditions that had held up the fight last year. They include an agreement to random drug testing and a tentative agreement on a 50-50 split of the purse, according to BoxingScene.com’s Rick Reeno.

Now it’s up to Mayweather, says Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. According to the veteran promoter, Mayweather has until mid-July to accept the proposal. If Mayweather fails to accept the deal by mid-July, Arum and Pacquiao will look for a November replacement. Top Rank fighters Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto are the frontrunners to replace Mayweather if the deal falls through.

“We’re waiting on Floyd. Floyd has to decide whether he’s going to fight this year or next year or not at all,” Arum said. “It’s up to him, man. He isn’t up to any obligation. We want a fight this year, and if he doesn’t take the fight this year, then we’ll find somebody else.”

It was an Out of Bounds commenter who noted on our previous Pacquiao-Mayweather post: “Come on, while we’re young!” Yep, these negotiations are veering dangerously near the borders of Brett Favre Procrastinationville.
Anyway, if Mayweather continues to hedge, I happen to know that Jose Canseco is available.

I still doubt that this fight will ever happen but Ross Greenburg of HBO is involved in the negotiations. He is one person who could put the camps into their proper places. A little light at the end of the tunnel.

  3. Kamundi - Jul 2, 2010 at 2:56 AM

I love both boxers and it for the interest of boxing fraternity that this match takes place.Money the world is looking at you to say yes!

  4. Rohchoi - Jul 2, 2010 at 3:22 AM

i have only one word to say Mayweather is the only one in the world with “undecided champion” title.

  5. Lee - Jul 2, 2010 at 3:40 AM

    @aznpride
“nope pacquiao is scared and so would rather fight margarito or cotto he knows he can beat them but floyd he will be beated badly so he is offering things that are impossible for floyd mayweather to accept”
You call other people idiot when you can’t even properly construct a sentence? C’mon!

  6. dru - Jul 2, 2010 at 8:04 AM

not sure why Floyd’s afraid. I could wreck Manny and I’m blind. Then again, it’s not often they allow automatic weapons in the ring.

  7. Bob Arum - Jul 2, 2010 at 10:39 AM

Mayweather is SCARED. PERIOD. THIS FIGHT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. HIOSTORY WILL TELL HE’s A COWARD. BOXING FANS WILL KNOW IT. THE WORLD WILL KNOW IT. WHO GIVES A DAMN ABOUT HIS COVETED “0″ IF HE DOES NOT FIGHT THE BEST!!!!!!!!! COWARD IN MY BOOK.

I agree with you completely Vigor2001. These Pac fans/Mayweather haters sound ridiculous. They are obviously not fans of the sweet science. I enjoy watching both Pac and Mayweather fight, and can’t wait for the deal to be completed. These Pacquiao fans sure do a WHOLE LOT of yapping though (and a lot of it is some bigoted BS). I sure hope that their boy can back it up. Regardless of what they say, Mayweather is not an easy fight. But Mayweather’s fans sure seem to have a lot more class…at least on this thread.

This is why I am more interested in MMA/UFC. Dana White already has the next several HW fights scheduled so you can not duck or request certain abnormal conditions before accepting a fight. You either fight or you lose the belt. I would love to see this fight as would most people but these fighters have too many outside influences that determine who they fight and when. Boxing may want to consider going to a system that is similar to the UFC’s or it will continue to lose its fan base to MMA. I was once a die hard boxing fan but it is crap like this that I can not get past in boxing any longer. Sure I will tune into a super-fight like this when they happen but how often is that?this fight should have taken place already. So far Mayweather is losing the PR battle and I would guess that he would lose the fight as well.

This fight will never happen. Gayweather will retire or resort to delays and maybe agreed for a fight next year and then backed out!
Now, the people will surely know who’s avoiding who! Gayweather has always been scared of the Pacman and what kind of damage Pacman can inflict on him so I don’t see this fight happening at all.

  12. Sailor Fernandez - Jul 2, 2010 at 2:17 PM

I have no doubt that this fight will happen coz it could, because pacman is already agree to Mr Gayweather condition what ever it takes. It seems this is the call for Mr Gayweather to accept it, he has all what he got and there’s no reason to refuse for this offer. So to all pacman fans fasten your seat belt and let us see how Mr Gayweather kiss his face on the floor and what damage can he receive to the punching power of Pacman, we knew Gayweather can’t defeated Pacman. At the very first time Gayweather and Sr Gayweather has scared to face the Pacman coz it end’s to a knock out, I bet it for that…

  13. Teriqua - Jul 2, 2010 at 4:57 PM

If there is a delay, perhaps Mayweather is insisting on a drug test. I hope there some enforcement of this test as Pacquiao has a bad reputation for juicing.

  14. Teriqua - Jul 2, 2010 at 5:07 PM

If there is a fight between these two, there is not doubt that Mayweather will have Pacquiao on his back pretty quick. I would say Mayweather will let the little PacRat chase him around a little, just for fun. Then we will see May weather land a few well-placed powerful punches that send Pacquiao flying across the ring where he lands on his back and doesn’t get up. The end.

  15. Teriqua - Jul 2, 2010 at 5:27 PM

If you are Leonard Ellerbe, then I am the f***ing Tooth-fairy.
C’mon, a “friend and/or advisor” WOULD NOT insult their friend/client in public. Certainly you would not make him out to be a stammering moron.
And last, you say, “Please you have to understand that our fighter gets confused and incoherent and sometimes, terrified, stutter and don’t know what to do if he reads “Pacquiao” on each page. Stay tuned for the progress.” (my bad, you actually started with the word ‘Pleas’ – I corrected out of habit).
I think they are looking for story-tellers to volunteer at most Libraries. Perhaps you should put your crazy behind on the city bus and take your story-telling somewhere it’s wanted.
But I think you will need to have the reading skills required for children’s books.

  16. Teriqua - Jul 2, 2010 at 5:41 PM

    Hey Pinay,
This isn’t really a friend or advisor of Mayweather. It’s some fool who is playing.
AS for Manny and his culture… he has a undeniable history of using Performance-enhancing drugs.
If he wants to hide behind the excuse of his culture, then he should go back to his country and pursue his career until he is strong enough to come back to America and have a clean fight. American fighters have their own Testosterone, they don’t need to inject it. That said, your boy may not have what is takes to fight with the American men.

  17. Teriqua - Jul 2, 2010 at 5:44 PM

Nice grammar. What language is it you are speaking?

  18. clyde - Jul 2, 2010 at 7:00 PM

This time mayweather will encountered defeat

  19. jason - Jul 3, 2010 at 9:56 AM

Mayweather can take as long as he wants 2 sign atleast he didnt run from mosley like pac-roids did.. just the truth people.. just the truth

  20. mrroboto - Jul 3, 2010 at 11:36 PM

Floyd is a slick businessman he’s just milking the emotions of the fans who will pay him top dollar to fight Manny. Its all about marketing the more people talk about him the better good or bad publicity is still publicity. Its a trick to have all of us riled up for the mega fight so he can milk all the boxing fans all over the worked for all your benjamins. Who wins is a mystery until it happens, and we will all pay to see it happen because of the drama and we are all sucked into it. Floyds a genius but he’s gonna lose this fight but he will make a bundle so its all worth it.

  21. rey - Jul 4, 2010 at 12:04 AM

i dont think its ever going to happen mayweather only fights u when ur all washed up thats what he does.perfect example oscar delahoya now that he was all washed up hey lets fight common mayweather step up 2to the plate.

  22. pinay69 - Jul 4, 2010 at 1:43 PM

How did u know that he is using performance ehancing drugs? Do you have any proof? Because if you do, you should have given this important information to the public so you can help in justifying Mayweathers act of cowardness. If you are paying attention, the author said ” agreeing to pretty much all the conditions that had held up the fight last year. They include an agreement to random drug testing and a tentative agreement on a 50-50″, and why are you correcting everyone’s grammar. As far as I can remember I don’t see any of your credentials . Are you a grammar teacher? Just so you know some people likes to shorten their sentences, but I guess you would not be aware of that as well, since you don’t even agree on respecting peoples culture and beliefs. I know that boxing is all about speed and technique and not just strength alone. For what I have seen he possessed all that. Not just the strength and endurance that comes from Drugs. Let me guess your first response to my letter would be. Hmmmm “well you mispelled this…. and your grammar is wrong in sentence #….I believed that my English is not bad, considering English is my second language and at this point, I don’t give a rats a** if you don’t like the way I write.

  23. June - Jul 4, 2010 at 2:19 PM

Then convince FMJ sign the contract so to prove your point. All your insights are baseless at this point unless they face each other in the ring. Pacman is so willing to make this fight to happen to prove his point but why can’t FMJ do the same?

  24. Comments from nono are a "No No" - Jul 4, 2010 at 10:25 PM

nono, you must be as illiterate as Mayweathers dumb ass. If you read, which I dont think you can, Pacquiao has agreed t all terms for the fight. Its up t Mayweather now. From what Mayweather was saying in an interview, he wanted to take a 2 year hiatus (do you know what that means nono ?? It means Mayweather wants to take a break for 2 years) from boxing. Oh yah, juuust in time when Pacquiao has agreed to the terms for the fight. I guess Mayweather has run out of excuses, and is just gonna plain back-out. He also wants to wait 2 years knowing Pacquiao wants to leave boxing to pursue his political career. That way Mayweather wont have to fight him ever. Like we said, Maywether is a coward. KFC=Ketucky Floyd Chicken.

  25. wabas - Jul 5, 2010 at 1:49 PM

    LMAO!
Flomosexual is not going to fight Pacquiao. He’ll make all kinds of excuse, like he wants more money, he wants to the fight in Vegas only, he wants to be the drug commission, what date to fight, at what weight, the glove size, the ring size, etc. HamsterMay will keep coming up with new demands until he find one that Pacquiao will not agree too.
Flomo the clown would rather spend the night with his boyfriend Eller-bee-utch in the sack than get a beat down from Pacquiao.
Pretty Boy changed his name to “money” because he realized he started to look like his Predator dad. LMAO Imagine Mayweather sr. being called Pretty Boy. lol . . . that’s the real reason why Flomo decided to get rid of the Pretty Boy name.
Pretty Boy i.. err….Predator Jr. knows Pacquiao is at the top of his abilities right now, he knows he can’t beat Pacquiao. PJ is going to wait till 2012 when Pacquiao slows down a bit, gets older a bit. Just like when Ray Leonard ducked Hearns for 9 years before giving him a rematch.
Flomo is the typical nitter. Loud, boisterous, pretentious who is very uncomfortable being black.
