Invading the field at the World Cup for fun and profit

Jun 29, 2010, 12:20 PM EDT

This is either a good example of business marketing or an even better example of bringing horrible luck to your team. Here we see Joe Fernandez, a waiter at Red Mesa Cantina in St. Petersburg, Fla., who thought that it would be a good idea to rush the field during Mexico’s World Cup game with Uruguay last week. Yes, that’s a Mexican flag he’s using as a cape, and some sort of noisemaker (virtually useless in that vuvuzela-saturated environment). The odd thing about this is that Fernandez anounced that he was going to do it before he even left for South Africa. And Red Mesa, of course, named a margarita drink special in his honor. And got mentioned on a bunch of blogs.

Of course, fueled by Fernanez’s heroics, Mexico went on to lose to Uruguay 1-0, then lost to Argentina 3-1. From the St. Petersburg Times:

Fernandez didn’t make it off the field. A guard tackled him in front of photographers and ushered him off the field.

“They plowed him,” said Red Mesa manager Jon Griffiths, who watched YouTube clips and read media accounts Wednesday.

Fernandez ran around and even ducked into one of the goals, although the referee ruled that he didn’t cross the line. Security finally tackled him, but luckily FIFA has this thing against technology, so he wasn’t tased.

Great video report on this via The Sporting Blog.
By the way, this Tampa Bay.com story is much more entertaining if you read it here.
