Despite U.S. World Cup loss, the sun still came up this morning

Jun 27, 2010, 9:00 AM EDT

At bars and in living rooms across the country yesterday, soccer fans young and old as well as longtime fans and those who are just discovering the Beautiful Game came together and congregated to cheer on our boys as they took on Ghana in the knockout stage of the World Cup. Sadly, as we all witnessed, things did not go as anyone hoped or anticipated as the U.S. came up short despite once again storming back to equalize the score after giving up yet another early goal.

Despair and disappointment were the emotions of the day yesterday, but do not fret, all is not lost. While we as a nation attempt to come to terms with the U.S. squad’s exit from the World Cup, we can take solace in the fact that there is always another match for the U.S., there will be another World Cup where the team will hopefully redeem themselves and build upon the inroads they made, not only in their performance on the pitch but also in the hearts and minds of newly initiated U.S. soccer fans.
So buck up, everyone, and keep your heads held high. There is nothing to be ashamed of – the team did their best and went down with dignity while giving it their all in a valiant effort, which is more than I can say about one of the fellows featured in the above video. Be thankful, folks, for many things, not the least of which for the fact that you were not an inebriated yahdood at a New York bar who appears to be openly weeping in an AP video news report. Sheesh.
Things could always be worse, right?
