British writer fires off Clinton sex joke in U.S.-Algeria lead

Jun 23, 2010, 2:00 PM EDT

OK, just try and tell me that this lead in The Guardian wasn’t written ahead of time; like, the minute the writer first learned that Bill Clinton would be attending the U.S. vs. Algeria World Cup match.

Bill Clinton was at this game, probably reflecting for 92 minutes that he scored more often than this lot.

Cheeky bastard!
A little British payback for all the Tony Hayward oil spill remarks? A writer who’s just a little bitter that he’s stuck in Pretoria, while England is playing in Port Elizabeth? Or did this lead, as they say, simply write itself (sometimes when something is so obvious, it happens)?

The ex-Commander-In-Chief looks a little bored in this photo, and there are three reasons for that:

* He’s watching the game with Sepp Blatter (not seen, on Clinton’s left), so he can’t curse about the lousy officiating.

* It’s soccer.

* Still waiting for vuvuzela vendor.

Afterward, Clinton praised the U.S. effort:

“Every contest eventually becomes a headgame,” the former president said at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. “I like people who don’t quit though. We are not keen on quitters in my family.”

Not seen: George W., on the other side of the stadium, holding up a Mission Accomplished banner at halftime.
