Today's England World Cup forecast: cloudy with a chance of meltdowns

The situation is becoming downright surly as it pertains to England’s meandering, uninspired and lackluster performance thus far in the World Cup. After another display of underachieving in a 0-0 draw with Algeria on Friday, the fans, the British media and even member of the team are displaying their collective frustration regarding the team’s inept play in their first two matches in group play. The two draws have left England in quite the precarious position. With only one match remaining, England has to beat Slovenia simply to advance, certainly not the way the team or its fans envisioned the first week of the World Cup to go.
First we have Wayne Rooney, who took offense when the fans expressed their extreme displeasure with how the team played by reigning down a chorus of boos after their match (via The Guardian):
A goalless draw against Algeria, ranked 30th in the world and in their first finals for 24 years, prompted boos on the final whistle from the England contingent in the crowd. Rooney, whose performance had spluttered uncharacteristically, reacted by shouting into a television camera: “Nice to see your own fans booing you. If that’s what loyal support is … for ****’s sake.”
Yamma-hamma. Video of the overly-sensitive Rooney’s exasperated response to the boos after the jump.
Annnnn-gry.
To make matters worse, a mere moments after Rooney’s editorial comments, an irate fan somehow breached security and gained access to England’s locker room. Upon entry, he berated David Beckham, who is not even participating in this World Cup due to injury but is assisting coach Fabio Capello. Via The Telegraph:
Provincial police spokesman Colonel Billy Jones said the man, who was wearing a red T-shirt, was now wanted for trespassing. He said police were investigating why he was not handed over to officers, in which case he would have been arrested.
Colonel Jones said: “Somebody who is believed to be an England supporter managed to get into the changing room of the England team.
“There is no report he engaged with any of the team members. He was removed from the dressing room by one of the Fifa officials.
“At this stage we are consulting with all the security agents that were present and will be looking at all the available surveillance footage to establish how this person got in. He has not been arrested.”
Ugly. It’s getting a wee bit surly, now isn’t it? Not that I wish ill will upon the English – well, maybe a little bit – this has the makings of one epic mess, something that the British rags will be writing about for years to come. And given the vitriolic manner in which that nation’s scribes can write when they get on a roll, their bitter output would be a delight to read. One can only imagine how nasty it could get if England somehow loses to Slovenia. Not bloody good, chap. Not bloody good.
