PETA will pay fine for 'cowardly' bullfighter

Jun 18, 2010, 12:00 PM EDT

You remember Cristian Hernandez, the Mexican bullfighter who fled the ring rather than face the bull. As if that wasn’t embarrassing enough for the guy, he was arrested for breach of contract, and had to pay a fine. But there is nothing animal-related that escapes the gaze of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, who announced on Thursday that they are paying Hernandez’s fine.

Any coward can bully an animal. But it takes courage to walk away despite the jeers of spectators. To send a message to those who deride him, PETA is reimbursing the cost of Hernandez’s fine and sending him a “Real Men Are Kind to Animals” certificate that he can wave in his detractors’ faces.

Video following the jump.

Townspeople may paint Hernandez as a coward or imply that he is somehow less of a man for refusing to torment and kill bulls who are physically harmed, driven into an arena with a roaring crowd, run around in dizzying circles, jabbed with knives, and finally stabbed to death at the point of complete exhaustion — but, as we know, bullies are the cowards.

Still, it was a better performance than Spain’s soccer team.

I agree with PETA – bullfighting is both cruel and cowardly

Thank goodness for PETA. They’re always there to do the right thing. As far as I’m concerned they do what I would like to. As a society we are judged by the way we treat our elderly, children and dumb animals. Do they sometimes go too far? NO.

Nah, PETA is so hypocritical… They kill 2 out of 3 animals that they “save” and other animal rights groups don’t want to be associated with them because they are so extreme, as in teaching their members how to make bombs to blow up laboratories and things. They have made a bad name for themselves to the point that everyone else is cutting ties with them.

The genius who made that comment hadn’t counted on Spain winning the World Cup! Besides, if I’m going to watch a bullfight, I’d rather watch a one-on-one affair between matador and bull than some crazy joke involving a cowardly wimp attacked by a gang of cowardly wimps!
