Spain blames sexy sideline reporter for World Cup loss

Jun 17, 2010, 11:00 AM EDT

The blame in Spain goes mainly on the dame. That’s sideline reporter Sara Carbonero to the far right of this photo here; think of her as Spain’s version of Erin Andrews (only not tainted by reality TV). And that’s Carbonero’s boyfriend on the far left, Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Yep, this photo was taken just prior to Spain’s loss to Switzerland in the World Cup, and yes, Carbonero was stationed near her boyfriend for most of the match. Perhaps not surprisingly, many Spanish fans are blaming this awkward setup for the loss.
And to make this even better, Carbonero was tasked with interviewing Casillas following the match.

The glamorous sports presenter — voted the sexiest journalist in the world — demanded to know exactly what had gone wrong in the shock defeat by Switzerland.

“How did you muck that up?’, she asked, leaving Casilllas squirming in embarrassment.

More from the London Daily Mail:

Irate fans claimed her presence on the sidelines — directly behind Casillas — had distracted him. Websites were inundated with comments claiming his mind may have been on ‘other things’

Casillas and Carbonero started dating at the Confederations Cup in South Africa last year.

Her presence at this year’s World Cup prompted controversy as Spanish WAGs — known as ‘esposas y novias’ — typically do not travel with the national side.

Carbonero responded: “Can I destabilize the team? I think it is nonsense.”
Well dear, you destabilized my chances of winning the World Cup pool, in which I chose Spain.

Spain’s version of Erin Andrews? no contest, not even close. she is sexier than sin, while Erin is a polite peck on the cheek. i would advice the spaniards to let her roam near the opposing goalie next game just to be on the safe side.

  2. ugly - Jun 17, 2010 at 5:10 PM

she’s pretty ugly in that pic, sorry.

Those darn Spaniards, that poor girl has a nice body but that most unfriendly expression, that frown, those blackened, petite eyes… Please… Or is it their trainer has kept them away from their wives & girlfriends and anything of the female gender lights them up? Or is it they need any excuse to calm their countrymen?

I’m sure you don’t become a world cup caliber goalie if you have weak concentration skills.

  5. Are you kidding me? - Jun 17, 2010 at 5:35 PM

I have to agree with ugly’s comment. Sorry, but that pic leaves a lot to be desired. I can count on both of my hands and toes of more beautiful/sexy women than her. Maybe if I drink a little ‘spanish fly’ I may see things differently.

just googled some pics of this girl… i have to say… she’s got the 2 face syndrome from seinfeld.

  8. who cares - Jun 18, 2010 at 7:07 AM

how should we “see” that she doesn’t look like a man in that close up pic of her face?

  9. Rediculous - Jun 18, 2010 at 9:03 AM

I agree with Gelardia, he’s been doing this for awhile, AND you can’t honestly be telling me that he doesn’t get distracted by MILLIONS of fans but can get so distracted, to lose a goal, by his girlfriend?? Thats just rediculous.

Women don’t belong in these sports venues unless they’re ugly which would solve these kinds of problems….ask Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi do do the sideline stick!

  11. Shaw - Jul 12, 2010 at 3:33 PM

Well, it was not only Casillas playing in the field. There were 11 more there. Were all of them stick to Carbonero…..Its nothing else but just stupid to blame her. Anyway, now people will forget all about this as Spain has already drove the trophy back to home. Congrats Spain…and Carbonero too…..
